SCHOOL STARTS THURSDAY!

Are you ready?

Is your student ready?

The summer break has come to an end and it's time to start thinking about our school year routines. Parents and students have adjustments which can make it doubly stressful.

Below are some basic tips to help you manage your evening. You are encouraged to create your own because following a plan has been proven to help relieve any first day stressors.

  • Get backpacks ready
  • Decide on whether whether your child wants to get lunch at school or take a packed lunch and be prepared.
  • Eat a nice dinner together as a family and talk about expectations for Thursday.
  • Establish new school year limits on social media and cell phone use.
  • Establish a new bed time and commit to sticking to it.
  • Set a good example for your child by following the same rules you set for them.
  • Choose and layout clothes and shoes.
  • Weather conditions for the first day of school in Boone County for Thursday August 17th: Partly sunny with a high of 84. The bus stop low in the morning will be in the lower 60's.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS

  • Walk with your young children to the bus stop and wait with them until the bus arrives. Make sure drivers can see the kids at your bus stop.
  • Teach children to stand at least three giant steps back from the curb as the bus approaches and board the bus one at a time.
  • Teach children to wait for the school bus to come to a complete stop before getting off and not to walk behind the bus.
  • If your child needs to cross the street after exiting the bus, he or she should take five giant steps in front of the bus, make eye contact with the bus driver and cross when the driver indicates it’s safe. Teach your child to look left, right and left again before crossing the street.
  • Drivers should follow the speed limit and slow down in school zones and near bus stops. Remember to stay alert and look for children who may be trying to get to or from the school bus.
  • Slow down and stop if you’re driving near a school bus that is flashing yellow or red lights. This means the bus is either preparing to stop (yellow) or already stopped (red), and children are getting on or off.
  • Download the real time bus app to know when your child's bus is coming into your neighborhood and when it is arriving at school. Download on Google Play or the Apple App Store. See below.
