We are so excited to have students back on campus. I saw many happy charter students jumping out of their cars on the first day back for in-person learning. It truly warms the heart!
Toddler II – 1 student tested positive; classroom closed until February 1.
Primary – 1 staff tested positive over break still experiencing symptoms, 1 staff is symptomatic.
Middle School – 2 students tested positive during the time students were remote learning following Winter Break.
Many of our staff have already received their first dose of the COVID vaccine. Others are registered to receive their vaccine at the Phoenix Union’s POD (point of distribution) this weekend. Please note that we are not at liberty to share personal health information about our staff, including whether or not an individual has been vaccinated.
All of our staff were required to view the recording of Eric Bailey’s presentation Unconscious Bias and Discrimination if they were unable to participate when it was first presented. All staff will have completed this by the end of the month. In addition, by mid-February, all staff (leads, assistants, support staff, circle, and special education) will have taken the Anti-Bias/Anti-Racism training from the American Montessori Society.
Next week we will invite all staff to begin the conversation about what their experience here at Villa has been regarding unconscious bias and racism. From that, we are planning on creating an inclusive, diverse staff advisory committee that will work towards shaping the student and staff experience here at the school. This is a very exciting next step.
There are also plans in the making for additional opportunities for us to work with Eric Bailey. We had one meeting with Eric this week and have another scheduled for next week. As details become finalized, I will share them with you.
Last week I mentioned an event hosted by the Association for Supportive Child Care on how to talk to our kids about race. Villa parent Nicole Newhouse, the executive director of the organization, shared this link to a recording of the event: https://youtu.be/4itcaWFj3ho. This is the first of a series they will be doing, so if there are parents in the community that want to participate, please contact Nicole at nnewhouse@ASCCAZ.ORG.
Have a great weekend
To my fellow football fans – enjoy the games on Sunday. May the best (I really mean my) team win!
