Health Education Benefits Our Students and All New Yorkers
Our educators are key to keeping our City safe and healthy. Teaching students disease and illness prevention skills and behaviors benefits all New Yorkers. The health and safety lessons our students learn in Health Education not only keep them healthier but also can help protect their families and caregivers, friends, neighbors, teachers, and others around them. To continue supporting educators while school buildings are closed—and to help plan for when buildings reopen—see the updated Health Education instructional toolkits (opens in new window), just in time to prepare for this year’s World AIDS Day on December 1. To help engage students in learning on this special day, the updated instructional toolkits now include:

  • Grades K-5: Disease and Illness Prevention: HIV/AIDS Unit
  • Grades 6-8 and 9-12: Sexual Health units

The required HIV/AIDS curriculum for grades K-12 is the NYC Department of Education HIV/AIDS Curriculum (2012 edition, opens in new window) Teachers can modify the lessons to fit their remote learning needs; suggestions are included in the toolkit updates:

  • Grades K-6: Five lessons per year from this curriculum are required for all students.
  • Grades 7-12: Six lessons per year from this curriculum are required for all students.

As part of a comprehensive Health Education curriculum, the updated instructional toolkits also include the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug-Use Prevention units for grades 6-8 and 9-12. Continue to visit the Blended and Remote Learning page (opens in new window) in our Professional Learning catalog for the latest resources, including videos on how to access PE and Health Education resources on the DOE’s TeachHub.
