Bullying Prevention Through Education and Awareness

October is National Bullying Prevention Month—time to bring awareness to the impact of bullying and how to prevent it. Bullying affects students’ education, physical and emotional health, and safety and well-being, and it can be prevented and stopped through education and awareness. In this issue of School Wellness Weekly, we highlight resources available from New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) to help educators, families and caregivers, and school communities build safe, inclusive spaces where every student feels respected and supported.

The Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) supports health education and physical education—academic subjects that provide students with knowledge and skills that can help address bullying, like empathy, communication, relationship skills, and social-emotional competencies. OSWP also connects NYCPS schools and districts with physical activity and other programs that strengthen a sense of school connectedness among students and staff. The NYCPS Citywide Wellness Policy, Empowering Strong and Healthy Students: The NYCPS School Wellness Policy, helps support all NYC public schools to build a strong foundation for students’ physical, mental, emotional and social health. This policy shares in plain language what students should expect from schools to feel nourished, energized, valued, and safe.

Physical Education

Building Strength Inside and Out: PE and Bullying Prevention

Physical education classes offer more than physical fitness—they help students develop empathy, confidence, and social awareness, all of which can play a role in preventing bullying.

The Community Building theme in the grades K–5 and 6–12 PE Scope and Sequences highlights key learning outcomes that support these skills. PE teachers can use this theme to design inclusive, cooperative activities that foster the social-emotional competencies students need to thrive in school and beyond.

To explore how to build a stronger sense of community in your PE class, join the Office of School Wellness Programs for the Community Building professional learning series. Together, we’ll unpack instructional strategies that help students feel connected, seen, and empowered.
