SCHOOL BEGINS WEDNESDAY, AUG. 16

CCSD15 is gearing up for another great school year set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 16 for students in grades 1-8. Preschool and kindergarten students head back to class Thursday, Aug. 17.

Teacher assignment and other school-specific information has been mailed to each child's home. If you have not received a packet yet, it will be arriving in the coming days.

Junior high school students are invited to walk through their schedule on Aug. 14 and elementary students can meet their teacher Aug. 15. Information on the timing of those events is included in your back-to-school mailer.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school!

DISTRICT 15 WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS DURING ORIENTATION PROGRAM

In preparation for the new school year, CCSD15 is holding a two-week new teacher orientation for more than 50 new educators beginning work with the district this year. The comprehensive event includes training on things like technology, cultural competency and curriculum. The teachers are also paired with a mentor.

The new educators join a district staff with history of excellence. Sixty-seven percent of our teachers have a master's degree or higher, and 118 have earned the prestigious National Board Certification for Professional Teaching Standards.

FEDERAL PROGRAM ALLOWS FREE BREAKFAST, LUNCH

Students at five CCSD15 schools will be offered a free breakfast and lunch daily beginning Aug. 16 as part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program, funded in full by the federal government.

CEP is a provision of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that allows schools with higher concentrations of students qualifying for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch and Breakfast Program to provide breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge.

The program begins Aug. 16 and will be offered to students on all school attendance days. Participating schools include Jane Addams Elementary School, Lake Louise Elementary School, Virginia Lake Elementary School, Winston Campus Junior High School and John G. Conyers Learning Academy. More information on CEP is available here.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM OFFERED TO JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS

Beginning this fall, CCSD15 junior high school students will have the unique opportunity to start and launch their own businesses by participating in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), sponsored by the Palatine Chamber of Commerce.

Started at the University of Rochester in 2004, YEA! began as a weekly class, taught on the university campus. YEA! has since expanded to other colleges, chambers of commerce and high schools.

Over the course of the year, CCSD15 junior high students will brainstorm ideas, write business plans, pitch their plans to a group of investors, obtain funding, launch their enterprise and actually sell their products or services.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2017-18 YEA! after-school class. Click here to download and complete an application. Contact Steven Gaus with the Palatine Chamber of Commerce with any additional questions.
