The Case of the DNA Scam
This latest scam consists of Mr. Shenanigans calling cardholders pretending to be from Medicare. These callers will request that you give them your Medicare number, Social Security number and other personal information in exchange for DNA Testing Kits!
Wait, what?
That's correct, dear reader. DNA Testing Kits. With the emergence of these at-home kits that allow you insight into not only your family tree, but also into potential health risks that you may be unaware of (like cancer, renal failure or hair loss), Mr. Shenanigans has found a way to harness this for his own nefarious purposes.
Medicare does not give out DNA Kits
. Medicare, like other government agencies, will not contact you over the phone unless it is to return a call you have previously placed.
The Case of the Fake Caller I.D.
Another new scam by Mr. Shenanigans is to trick the Caller I.D. feature on your phone. Scammers will use technology to hide their actual phone number so that they appear legitimate. Just because your Caller I.D. says "Washington, D.C." or "Government" or comes from the 202 area code, doesn't mean anything.
If you are ever feeling uneasy in a phone conversation regarding your private information, please end the conversation immediately.
