Held in Gaston Hall for the first time since 2019, the White Coat Ceremony marked the official beginning of medical education for first-year students at the School of Medicine. “Georgetown University School of Medicine Class of 2026, welcome to the house of medicine,” said Earl H. Harley, Jr., MD, FACS, FAAP, professor of otolaryngology and pediatrics, after leading the new medical students in reciting the Hippocratic Oath at the August 5 ceremony.
Laughter and cheer could be heard all around Anacostia Park as a host of first- and second-year medical students poured their energy and excitement into the children attending the ninth annual HoyaMed Summer Sports Camp July 30-31. (Volume up!)
In June, Christine Mauvais (N’24) traveled to Lourdes, France with classmates through Georgetown’s Lourdes Magis Immersion Program, an annual trip within the School of Nursing, to help pilgrims who were seeking healing in a city known for miracles.
Appointments and Achievements
John Kraemer, JD, MPH, associate professor in the department of health management and policy at the School of Health, has been named chair of the department. Kraemer began his work at Georgetown as a fellow at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law in 2008 and joined the medical center community in 2010.
Danelle Chavez, MPH, senior environmental and occupational safety manager, will serve as interim leader of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). Chavez has more than 15 years of experience in environmental and occupational health. Since coming to Georgetown in 2016, she has continuously improved EH&S programs and reduced hazards through creative solutions. Chavez currently serves as a subject matter expert for laboratory, environmental and occupational health and safety, overseeing EH&S programs, making recommendations, and working with groups to maintain compliance and promote workplace safety.

This issue of The Pellegrino Report features a message for all who are beginning their training as well as to all at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital who cultivate kindness and the virtue of solidarity. “When we consider ethics in medicine, we can look at the actions of individuals, but another important part of ethics is how individuals come together to meet a common goal,” wrote Myles N. Sheehan, SJ, MD, director of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, professor of medicine and David Lauler Chair in Catholic Health Care Ethics.
