Principals share successes, challenges in reopening schools
Three high school principals shared their schools' successes and challenges with face-to-face instruction in a Nov. 5 webinar hosted by LACOE as part of its "Lessons from the Field" virtual panels.
Panelists included Rocklin HS Principal Davis Stewart (Rocklin USD, Placer County), Rancho Buena Vista HS Principal Joseph Clevenger (Vista USD, San Diego County) and Foothill HS Principal Michelle England (Tustin USD, Orange County). The webinar, moderated by LACOE Deputy Superintendent Arturo Valdez, provided education leaders an opportunity to learn from others who have already reopened schools. "There's going to be potholes. You're going to trip and fall. There's going to be mistakes, but that's okay," Clevenger said. "We're going toward the greater good."
The next webinar is scheduled today, Nov. 9, 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Panelists will include elementary school principals Amanda Makis (Rocklin Elementary, Rocklin USD, Placer County), Kim Morton (Leadership Academy, Vista USD, San Diego County) and Kathi Denny (Tustin Ranch Elementary, Tustin USD, Orange County). Participation is open to superintendents, cabinet-level district administrators and principals.

LACOE Teacher of the Year inspired by immigrant parents
LACOE Teacher of the Year Theresa Gonzales-Harris credits her Filipino immigrant parents for instilling in her the importance of education and the value of hard work. Gonzales-Harris and other District Teachers of the Year in Los Angeles County were honored in a virtual ceremony on the first day of October, which coincidentally ushered in Filipino American History Month and the birth month of iconic Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong.
Gonzales-Harris, who has served as a LACOE teacher for 25 years, hopes to inspire her students to have an understanding of "where they came from, where they want to go," to be kind and tolerant, and to make a difference in their community. She currently teaches at Visions County Community School in Whittier. She received her BA in History from UCLA and her master's in school counseling from Cal State, Dominguez Hills.
