Researchers Katie Buckman and River Vanderveer visited remote areas of Big Cypress National Preserve by helicopter to survey vegetation, bird nesting sites, and use a hollow box to sample fish populations in the wetlands. Katie was the crew lead on this research excursion. River is an undergraduate researcher studying Environmental Science. Carmen Varela, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, received the Alzheimer’s Association’s Research Fellowship to Promote Diversity. The $149,871 award will fund research in her lab on the relationship between sleep and memory. Read more.

Research Core Winner and Beauty of Science Profile

Maciej Stawikowski, Ph.D., Assistant Scientist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and member of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, was awarded a Research Cores Internal Pilot Program grant. Stawikowski will utilize the FAU Advanced Cell Imaging Core for this award. Learn more about Stawikowski's research in a recent profile called, "The Beauty of Science" that details his studies on neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer's disease.

In Memoriam: Emmanuelle Tognoli, Ph.D.
|
|
|
Sadly, Dr. Emmanuelle Tognoli passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 23, 2022, following a valiant struggle to overcome a rare and aggressive cancer, which ultimately took her life. Dr. Tognoli was a Research Professor in the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences and Research Affiliate Professor in the Department of Physics. Her passing is a great loss for both programs.
Dr. Tognoli was a very talented scientist, a respected colleague, and a beloved mentor and role model for her many students. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Read more.

In Memoriam: Dean J. Monette, Ph.D.
|
|
|
Dean Monette (April 12, 1968 – April 7, 2022) was a true FAU Owl. He graduated with three degrees from FAU, a B.S. in Biological Sciences (2004), an Environmental MBA (2006), and a Ph.D. in Geosciences (2014).
He was passionate about the academic environment at FAU, making the most of the opportunities FAU provided, and encouraging his graduate student peers and the undergraduate students he taught and mentored to follow his lead and achieve to their fullest potentials. Read more.

Two FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science students were winners of the 58th annual Florida Society of Geographers Awards. Department of Geosciences Ph.D. candidates Asha Paudel won the “Outstanding Oral Presenter, Ph.D.” award, and David Brodylo received the “Outstanding Poster Presenter, Ph.D.” award. Read more.
