Dinosaurs' Last Spring: Study Pinpoints Timing of Asteroid Impact
A groundbreaking study led by researchers in the Schmidt College of Science Department of Geosciences and an international team of scientists conclusively confirms the time of year of the catastrophic Chicxulub asteroid impact, responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs and 75 percent of life on Earth 66 million years ago. Protecting South Florida's Wild Vervet Monkey Population
FAU alumna Missy Williams, Ph.D., founder of the Dania Beach Vervet Project, and her team, were interviewed by WPTV about their work to secure a permanent enclosure and skytrails for a colony of monkeys that are thriving in Dania Beach. The population of vervet monkeys have called South Florida home since the 1940s. A number of FAU student researchers are involved in the project, including Kathryn Coates, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology, and is investigating monkey vocalization patterns. FAU Scientist Aims to Ensure ‘Microbe-free’ Mars Samples
Gregg Fields, Ph.D., executive director of FAU’s Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-HEALTH) and a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, is working in collaboration with a team of scientists at NASA to ensure a “microbe-free” return of Mars samples in a vessel with multiple layers of protection. Read more.
National Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research
FAU is one of the few universities in the nation designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research. The Department of Mathematical Sciences is home to one of the leading research groups in quantum-safe cryptography, where our researchers have played an important role in securing FAU’s re-designation as a center of excellence through the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency. Certified Nursing Assistant Test Prep Course
This continuing education course is a test preparation course intended for students to “challenge” the CNA exam. This exam preparation course is not affiliated with any certifying boards. The course meets in-person Saturday and Sunday 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. on the Davie campus and Monday through Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

Supporting the SDGs: Rethinking the Role of Streets in the Climate-adapted City 
Rethinking street space offers an opportunity to tie climate mitigation and climate adaptation together to accomplish multiple community goals. The Taylor & Francis’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Online website now features four chapters of a recent book co-authored by John L. Renne, including chapter 3, From urban resilience to street resilience: Rethinking the role of streets in the climate-adapted city. Read more.
Funding Research Expeditions

Sean Williamson, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the Marine Science Lab was selected by the FAU Postdoctoral Advisory Committee for a $1,000 grant which funds travel to present research at a national conference in 2022. Williamson studies turtle physiology and conservation. Read more.
