Sea Turtle Researchers Recipients of Career Awards for Conservation

The International Sea Turtle Society (ISTS) recognized Jeanette Wyneken, Ph.D., with the ISTS Champions Award for outstanding work towards the effective conservation of sea turtles. Mike Salmon, Ph.D., was the recipient of the ISTS Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his significant impact on sea turtle biology and conservation through the course of his career.

Gregg Fields, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Director for the Center for Molecular Biology & Biotechnology. Gregg discusses his research on metastasis, and the search for novel inhibitors to slow the progression of cancer.

Ask a Scientist host, Science Dean and Professor, Ata Sarajedini, Ph.D., meets with Maria Fadiman, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Geosciences at FAU and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer. Ata speaks with Maria about her research as an ethnobotanist and the places around the world her studies take her. Maria discusses the relationship between people and plants, focusing on conservation and sustainability.

Brian Benscoter, Ph.D., is a plant ecologist who investigates the influence of natural disturbances, such as wildfire, on ecosystems. Brian's research was funded by a new award through the National Park Service, Critical Ecosystem Study Initiative (CESI) program, titled "Influence of Shrub Encroachment on Fire Behavior in Central Everglades Wetlands." Brian states, "Through this project, we intend to help improve land management strategies to effectively use prescribed burning to restore healthy wetland habitats in the Everglades."

2019 Science Olympiad on Saturday, February 23. These young scientists engaged in 48 different competitions, ranging from Protein Modeling to Elastic Glide Launcher.
