Palm Beach County Commissioners Tour Florida Atlantic's Marine Science Lab 

Throughout the fall semester, several Palm Beach County officials visited the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s Marine Science Laboratory at the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex in Boca Raton. Professor Jeanette Wyneken, Ph.D., led lab tours for District 4 Commissioner Marci Woodward (pictured above second from the left), former District 3 Commissioner Michael A. Barnett, District 2 Commissioner Gregg Weiss, and former District 7 Commissioner Mack Bernard, who was recently elected to the Florida Senate (District 24). Student researchers from the Marine Science Lab, staff from the Schmidt College of Science, and members from Florida Atlantic's Office of Government Relations also participated in the visits. Zariah Walker Named 2024 Student Talon Award Winner

Congratulations to senior health sciences major Zariah Walker! She received the Student Talon Award during Florida Atlantic’s Alumni and Community Engagement Talon Leadership Awards ceremony as part of Homecoming 2024. Read more. FAU Named 2024 Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State

Florida Atlantic University has been named as a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Leader for 2024. Each year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recognizes select HSIs for their strong engagement with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program. This is the second time that FAU has been featured as part of this initiative – the first being in 2023. Read more.

VoLo Foundation Makes $25,000 Gift to Support 'The Invading Sea'

Florida Atlantic University received a gift of $25,000 from VoLo Foundation to support The Invading Sea, an award-winning website dedicated to sharing nonpartisan news and opinion pieces about climate change and other environmental issues in Florida. VoLo Foundation is a private family organization that exists to accelerate change and global impact by supporting science-based climate solutions, enhancing education and improving health. VoLo Foundation is a leader in bringing attention to climate impacts and solutions in Florida,” said Nathan Crabbe, editor of The Invading Sea. “As Florida experiences climate impacts like extreme heat, sea level rise and stronger hurricanes, The Invading Sea is working to help people better understand why these changes are happening and what can be done about them. VoLo Foundation’s support will help us encourage bipartisan dialogue that brings Floridians toward consensus on potential solutions.” 

WLRN Panel at FAU Discusses Everglades Restoration Challenges and Climate Impacts

The Nov. 19 panel discussion was moderated by Jenny Staletovich, an environmental reporter for South Florida public radio station WLRN who hosts the Bright Lit Place podcast on Everglades restoration. The panel featured five experts on Everglades issues, ranging from lake ecology to geology and restoration science, including scientists from the Schmidt College of Science. Watch: New York Times Columnist Carl Zimmer Presents Lecture: Will AI Figure Out Life Itself?

Watch: Carl Zimmer, an award-winning New York Times columnist and author, presented a riveting lecture titled, “Is Artificial Intelligence Going to Figure Out Life Itself?” to an audience of more than 200 people on Nov. 21. The free lecture, presented by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s Nat and Dorothy Hyman Science Lecture Series, took guests on a mind-bending exploration of how AI its teaching itself the fundamental principles of biology. Watch here. FAU Pre-Health Professions Entrepreneurship Summit Brings Experts to Speak to Future Doctors

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science hosted the 2024 Pre-Health Professions Entrepreneurship Summit on the Boca Raton campus Oct. 17-19. The three-day summit provided undergraduate students with insights from local doctors about how to run their own medical practice and manage a major health facility. Students also had the chance to explore careers and network with professionals in multiple medical field specialties.

Exercise Science Professor Delivers ‘Successful Aging’ Community Presentation 

Numerous residents from the Toby and Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences in Boca Raton came to listen to B. Sue Graves, Ed.D., FACSM, FISSN, director of the FAU Well Program and associate professor in the Schmidt College of Science’s Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion, on Oct. 22 for her engaging talk on “Successful Aging.” Read more.

Alumnus Matt Stock '06 Receives Prestigious Editorial Excellence Award 

Matt Stock

Schmidt College of Science alumnus Matt S. Stock, Ph.D., ‘06, FNSCA, CSCS, was named the 2024 recipient of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (JSCR) Editorial Excellence Award. Stock, a graduate of the college’s Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion, is now an associate professor and the director of the Institute of Exercise Physiology and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Central Florida. Faculty Spotlight: Marianne Porter, Ph.D.


For over 10 years, Marianne Porter, Ph.D., has been leading the way in biological sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. A well-established researcher in comparative biomechanics and functional morphology, Porter currently serves as a co-director of Florida Atlantic University’s Master’s in Marine Science and Oceanography program. Porter has been awarded accolades such as the coveted National Science Foundation (NSF) Early Career (CAREER) award. Read More.
