When two groups of like animals attempt to co-habitat the same territory, it can often lead to a battle. But that wasn’t the case for two groups of dolphins who spent the last few years living in the same waters, according to a study by Denise Herzing, Ph.D., an affiliate professor in the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, and her team, who were recently published in the journal, Marine Mammal Science. Read more.

Florida Atlantic University moved up in the U.S. News & World Report list of “Top Public Schools,” to No. 132 from No. 140 in this year’s ranking of the nation’s best universities. This marks the largest rise out of all public universities in the state of Florida. Read more.

Supporting Student Research and Smart Streetscapes: $26 Million NSF Engineering Research Center

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science is serving as a key partner for a major National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center at Florida Atlantic University. Two faculty members in the college are part of the leadership team for the grant. Donna Chamely-Wiik, Ph.D., associate dean for undergraduate research and prestigious fellowships for the FAU Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, and associate scientist for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is supporting student involvement and research. John Renne, Ph.D., AICP, professor and director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, is focusing on the development of smart streetscapes. Read more.

Journey to Health: Death to Cancer Cells
|

Researchers from the Schmidt College of Science earned a pilot grant for a project that allows them to use an anti-inflammatory drug to decrease damage to the heart muscles — a side effect of cancer treatment — while increasing death to cancer cells. Read more.

Astronomical Observatory Event Attracts Space Enthusiasts
|
|
The FAU Astronomical Observatory's Jupiter Perihelion Opposition to the Sun public viewing on September 23, brought in over 300 guests throughout the evening. Visitors enjoyed presentations about Jupiter, its moons and Juno, the next planetary probe mission to Jupiter, plus observations of the Jupiter system. This event was made possible by the Department of Physics and Eric Vandernoot, manager of the FAU Observatory and Astronomy and Physics lab coordinator.
