FAU, Virtual Planet, and City of West Palm Beach Unveil VR Experience

Virtual Planet, in partnership with Florida Atlantic University and the City of West Palm Beach, announced the launch of a revolutionary new virtual reality experience, “Sea Level Rise Explorer WPB.” The multidisciplinary team created a virtual simulation of the devastation that a Category 5 hurricane and sea level rise could have on West Palm Beach. 'New Horizons in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias' Awardees

Florida Atlantic University and the David and Lynn Nicholson Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research formed a collaboration to establish the “New Horizons in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias” Pilot Funding Program. The pilot funding competition awarded three research projects that include faculty and a Ph.D. student from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Read more.

Sea Turtle Grants Program Awards Funding to FAU

Congratulations to Jeanette Wyneken, Ph.D., Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of FAU’s Marine Science Lab at Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex, and her Ph.D. student, Samantha Trail, for being selected to receive funding from the Sea Turtle Grants Program, during the 2023-24 grant cycle. Science Fest Celebrates Diversity and Student Research

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science hosted the inaugural Science Fest throughout the Breezeway on the Boca Raton campus on April 14. Approximately 1,000 visitors, including area high school and middle school students, community members, FAU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff enjoyed science-related exhibitions, a student poster competition, along with interactive games and activities. Postdoc Spotlight: Juliana Marques, Ph.D.

Juliana Marques, Ph.D., is an awardee of the College's inaugural Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program. Marques is collaborating with principal investigator, Professor Salvatore Lepore, Ph.D., Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, and co-principal investigators, Associate Professors Claudia Rodrigues, Ph.D., and Bommareddy Ajay, Ph.D., Schmidt College of Medicine. The team is investigating the role of a novel compound developed at FAU, in preventing damage to the heart caused by chemotherapy in their study, “Development of Cardioprotective Treatments for Cancer.” Read more.

Science Student Earns Top Award at FAU Wave Competition

The FAU Wave Competition, an undergraduate and graduate applied research and entrepreneurial competition organized by FAU’s Division of Research, challenges students to develop innovative ideas targeting societal problems. Rachel Kavalakatt, a junior majoring in behavioral neuroscience in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, received the Dr. Eric H. Shaw FAU Wave Excellence in Innovation Award and a $2,000 cash prize for the innovation Carpal Tech 2.0, a carpal tunnel preventative biotech wearable that pairs with an app to help those suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Application Preparation for Pre-Med Students Course

The Application Preparation for Pre-Med Students Course (APPS) is a 5-day intense application preparation program for pre-medical and pre-dental students who will be applying in the current cycle. APPS is designed to help highly motivated students learn how to showcase their abilities, skills, and motivation throughout the application process to medical or dental school. Students receive hands-on individual support throughout the five day program. Learn more.

Polo Reef Science Internship
Registration is now open for interested students to apply for a 12-week internship opportunity on-site at the Polo Reef Company in New York. The internship is available for Florida Atlantic University students in the Summer 2023 semester. A diving certificate is preferred for internship applicants. The intern should reside within driving distance of the Polo Reef Company for the duration of the internship. Learn more.
