Science News and Updates
March 12, 2021
The spring edition of Science News and Updates newsletter coincides with the one-year mark of COVID-19 and it's emotional to reflect on all the changes it has brought to the ways we work and live. We would be remiss not to acknowledge the reality of this situation and how it has impacted us all over the last year. To those who have lost loved ones, we send our deepest sympathies. To those who have watched sick family members and friends suffer, or have battled the virus themselves, we send our love. To everyone, we send our gratitude. Thank you for continuing to learn with us, thank you for sharing your stories of success and struggle, and thank you for providing students with science learning experiences through it all.

Many educators are still working remotely, teaching students and leading professional learning virtually from our dining rooms or a corner of our homes. Some of us are working in hybrid situations, seeing students in person and virtually on alternating days or juggling the seemingly impossible task of doing both simultaneously. As the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available to educators across our county, more and more districts are reopening school buildings. We approach this next step with a collective sense of trepidation. We don’t know what tomorrow brings and we can’t imagine what our daily lives will look like in a month’s time. It’s a strange combination: this hesitancy along with the excitement we feel for the opportunity to once again experience authentic human connections with our peers and our students in person.

This pandemic has taught us many things, but for us as science educators, it’s highlighted the importance of prioritizing and advocating for science learning.

“As the format for school this fall continues to be hotly debated, we should not retreat from our commitment to science education. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 brought the need for a scientifically literate populace to the forefront of American consciousness. In the same way, we must consider this pandemic our generation’s calling to enliven science education, particularly in the early grade-levels.” This quote from a recent op-ed spotlights the need for each of us to be the voice in our circle that advocates for science.

Throughout the 2020-21 school year we will continue to amplify the voices of San Diego County science educators and come together to support each other and celebrate our successes during this time.

California Science Test Update
The California State Board of Education (SBE) met Feb. 24 and focused on a number of topics related to assessment and accountability. The SBE unanimously voted to direct California Department of Education staff to draft a waiver for the administration of the California Science Test (CAST) for the current (2020-21) academic year by calling it out as a separate motion from consideration of assessments for English language arts and math. It is expected that the waiver will be granted and that the CAST will not be administered this year.

#LearningFound Highlights Student Growth
If you follow the SDCOE Science team on Twitter, you may have noticed that we started using #LearningFound in our posts. The purpose of the new hashtag is to highlight and celebrate student learning and counter the narrative that students are experiencing “learning loss.”

The global pandemic has most definitely limited students’ access to learning inside a school building, but it has also presented many unique learning opportunities for students both virtually and in their homes and neighborhoods. This tweet resonated with many and has been seen by more than 8,000 people with 38 retweets and 87 likes from educators as far away as Delaware and North Carolina. Educators have started using the hashtag in their own posts and you can join the conversation with highlights of your students’ learning! Share the learning successes of your students on Twitter and add #LearningFound.

Here are some #LearningFound posts from San Diego County educators.
Consider following the SDCOE Science team on Twitter, @cjcochrane21 (Chelsea), @sdngss (John), and @twnklstrr (Crystal), as we often share upcoming events and science happenings from around our county and beyond.

Amazing work is happening throughout our county. To have your school or district featured in the next edition of Science News and Updates, share your NGSS story by completing this Google form.

Be sure to check out our NGSS in Action videos highlighting student learning in the classroom on the SDCOE Science Resource Center website.

Integrated Distance Learning Curriculum Created by SDCOE
The SDCOE Distance Learning Units of Study were purposefully designed to integrate content, and provide flexibility and choice. The units of study connect content in the following areas: English language arts, English language development, mathematics, science, history/social science, arts, computer science, and physical education through integrated study in K-5 and thematic units in grades 6-12. These open-source units are being developed in Google to ensure maximum flexibility for districts to use them with their preferred distance learning instructional platform. Also find the Learning at Home Bingo series and additional resources that support distance learning on the SDCOE COVID-19 webpage.
