This newsletter contains news and information of interest to Montana Science Olympiad coaches - current, past and future. For questions, please contact the MSU Science Math Resource Center.

See you at MSU in less than 3 weeks

Unless otherwise noted, all resources listed here are on the school teams and coaches page of the Montana Science Olympiad website.

This week's issue focuses on the Scilympiad software

If you don’t have an account yet, please make one as soon as possible. Go to Scilympiad's Montana site, click Log in on the top right and create an account as a new member, choosing Head Coach or Co-Head Coach. If you made an account for a previous season, it should still be there. Check to see that you can log in.

Full instructions are on the School Teams and coaches page (see link above)

Once you have a coach account and are logged in, it is time to register your team(s). If your school participated previously, they will already be on the list. However, if your school's team was previously coached by a different person, you may need to notify us so we can clear that person away. Please email mtscioly@montana.edu.

If you have more than one team, register each team separately, as you will be assigning your students to their specific team. To register your team, you can click on “register school” or go to https://scilympiad.com/mt/Reg/AddSchool

If possible, please use a full name for your school that includes the level -- e.g., Denver Junior High or Denver Middle School instead of just Denver. This is especially important if your school district brings a B team and a C team.

CLARIFICATION: We in the Science Olympiad office need to attach your team number to your team, once you have registered or added it to your account. We will do these as fast as possible, but it may take up to 24 hours. Please wait to add your students' names until after your team number is assigned.

Please complete these steps by Feb. 24 if at all possible. This will help us with our organization planning. We recognize that there might be changes as we get closer to the event so if you need to change after this that is fine. Our event supervisors will be using the wristbands – not Scilympiad -- to identify competitors/school teams as in the past. Entering your students into events in Scilympiad just helps us plan roughly how many total people will be in each event.

Coming next week.....

  • Talks & Tours registration will open next week (these are optional tours or talks at MSU that students and coaches may want to take part in during the down time after competitions and before the awards ceremony)
  • We will send the competition block schedule and event locations so you can see when your school will compete in each event along with room locations so your students in multiple events can start planning their day.
  • New this year -- if you spot any time conflicts (a student is scheduled to compete in 2 events at the same time) - we will ask you to notify us ahead of time and will see if we can get that cleared up before tournament day. We will always be available to resolve conflicts on tournament day -- students will be allowed to compete in all the events they have prepared for.

TOURNAMENT DAY SCHEDULE

The tournament day schedule is listed on the Competition Day Materials page and is similar to last year's schedule. Precise competition schedule is coming next week (when your school competes in each event)

Don't forget our FAQ page!

As coaches send questions that are helpful to everyone, we post them on the Science Olympiad FAQ page. Be sure to look here and also on the Events page for event clarifications before emailing us a question.

Remember to download the rule books and (continuously) look for event clarifications

The rule book is your friend! Download the rules manuals for the 2022-23 season from the National Science Olympiad website. Encourage your students to study every aspect of the rules - especially what safety equipment is required and what they are allowed to bring with them into the contest.

Never use a previous year's rule book, even if the event has the same title. There may be subtle and not-so-subtle changes in rules and themes from year to year.

The rules clarifications page is also your friend! As questions arise, clarifications to the rules are posted here on the national website.
