Volume 8

Connecting and Enhancing Community Engagement

Science Outreach will facilitate mutually beneficial and sustainable relationships between Princeton University Science educators and researchers. Science Outreach serves as a nexus connecting faculty, students, and postdocs with youth, schoolteachers, nonprofit organizations, and the broader community with the goal of increasing engagement, participation, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.  Science Outreach supports Astrophysical Sciences, Center for Statistics and Machine Learning, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Geosciences, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Physics, Princeton Neuroscience Institute, and Psychology.

Thank you for Volunteering

It has been an exciting ten months for Science Outreach. The success of this initiative would not be possible without YOU! Thank you for volunteering and contributing in whatever way you did to launch the Science Outreach initiative and for sharing your science with the students in our community.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have ideas for outreach opportunities or need assistance locating an area school or community partner to share your science. Please sign up to indicate your interest in volunteering this academic year.

Science Outreach Fellows

Science Outreach Fellows Program Begins this Fall

The Science Outreach Fellows Program will start this fall. Undergraduate students passionate about outreach and community engagement are encouraged to apply. Science Outreach Fellows will gain leadership skills in program development and planning while learning the impact of community engagement and identifying the needs of local schools and community partners.

Science Outreach Fellows will receive ongoing mentoring and hands-on science facilitation training to enhance community engagement with K-12 students. Please scan the QR code or click the button to receive an application. Please contact Paryn Wallace at parynw@princeton.edu for more information. Selected students will receive a stipend.

Summer Outreach Opportunities

Biochemistry Literacy Program

A Biochemistry Literacy Summer Camp comprised of young learners from across the country visited the Chemistry Department on July 6. Dali Davis, Chemistry graduate student (pictured left in photo) planned an immersive experience for these students. The day included a campus tour, chemistry demonstrations, research talks, and a graduate student panel. The highlight of the day was a poster session. The students shared their research posters in the Frick Atrium. The students’ presentations were amazing and displayed their passion for learning science.

Turning Point Discovery Center

Science Outreach volunteers lead hands-on activities for the Science on North Broad Summer Camp in Trenton on Saturday, July 8. The students learned about cell structure and had an activity with balloon cellular respiration. Turning Point Discovery Center is a STEAM focused program designed to encourage students in Trenton schools to tap into their creative genius and pursue science fields. Turning Point offers free activities and classes to students throughout the summer. Science Outreach volunteers Catherine Hexter (Geosciences), Michelle White (EEB), and Jacob Molina (Plasma Physics) will continue to be a part of the Saturday educational programs throughout the summer.

Millhill Child and Family Development Center

The Millhill STEM Explorer Program students had an exciting day in PNI on July 11. The day started for these middle school students from Trenton area schools with an eye tracking systems experience with Dr. Kirsten Ziman and Sarah Kimmel, a Psychology undergraduate student. After a campus tour and lunch, the students had a tour of the MRI and EEG facilities with Nick DePinto. The Millhill STEM Explorers Program provides students with a glimpse into the many different STEM-related careers with field trips to college campuses, and real-world settings to inspire them to pursue studies and careers in science fields.

Broader Impacts

Please reach out to Paryn Wallace, Associate Director of Science Outreach, if you would like to develop broader impact outreach opportunities for your funding applications. Paryn can help you explore creative ideas and connect you with area schools and community partners to implement your programs. Paryn Wallace – parynw@princeton.edu.
