Connecting and Enhancing Community Engagement

Science Outreach will facilitate mutually beneficial and sustainable relationships between Princeton University Science educators and researchers. Science Outreach serves as a nexus connecting faculty, students, and postdocs with youth, schoolteachers, nonprofit organizations, and the broader community with the goal of increasing engagement, participation, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.  Science Outreach supports Astrophysical Sciences, Center for Statistics and Machine Learning, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Geosciences, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Physics, Princeton Neuroscience Institute, and Psychology.

Introducing the Science

Outreach Fellows


This group of undergraduate students will engage in ongoing community outreach opportunities for K-12 students in area schools and community programs. The Fellows have received community volunteer training in collaboration with the Pace Center. The Fellows will have science communication and mentor training to enhance their community engagement skills.

Boys and Girls Club Teen STEM Conference-

Location: 1040 Spruce Street, Lawrenceville, NJ

Opportunity: 2023 Teen STEM Conference

Date: Thursday, November 9

Time: 8:30 am (breakfast) – 1:00 pm

Event Details: This event will have over 225 high school students in attendance. Transportation can be provided.


Conference Needs:

  • Volunteers to run the same session throughout the day (there is an IMAP activity that the organizer is interested in using but your creativity will need to be used to extend the activity. Details will be provided.
  • Volunteers to be a part of the career panel to talk about your student experiences.
  • Volunteers to assist vendors with their workshops.        


Conference Agenda - The students will rotate between 4 different sessions during the day.

  • 9:50 – 10:35 Workshop/Career Panel Session 2
  • 10:40 – 11:25 Workshop/Career Panel Session 3

  • 12:50 – 1:00 Closing Session
  • 1:00 Conference Closed



Urban Promise


This is an opportunity for volunteers to work in groups of 3 to 4. If you don't have a group, one will be assigned to you based on your availability. You will need to work with your group to create a hands-on science/STEM activity. This can be based on your research or a general STEM Activity. Funding is available to purchase materials and resources. You will be contacted once a date/activity is confirmed with you and your group. Transportation can be provided.



Location: Urban Promise: Camp Grace, 601 N. Clinton Ave. Trenton, NJ

Dates and Times: Tuesday’s 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Students: 1st – 8th graders (20 total students, 4th graders have the largest group)

On site, you will need to divide students up into at least 3 to 4 groups for your hands-on activity (based on grade levels).

Science Saturday at the Library


In collaboration with the Trenton Public Library and the Mercer County Library system, Science Outreach will host Science Outreach Saturdays for students in 2nd - 5th grades from 10 am to 11:00 am. Science Outreach Saturdays will take place once a month. If your lab or group would like to sign up to share a hands-on engaging science activity with students, please indicate your interest by using the sign-up button or the QR code. Science Outreach will take care of the cost of your materials and provide transportation. Additional details will be provided.

SAVE THE DATE!


SYREN Modern Dance and Astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter collaborated to create "Ticktock," a dance that uses narrative sequences and highly physical movement to explore the nature of time, such as Einsteinʼs theories of Special and General Relativity, the arrow of time, and our human experiences of perception and memory.


Details: Tuesday, November 28 at 4:30 p.m., Glass Box Studio in Yeh College.

This a collaborative event sponsored by Science Outreach, the Council on Science and Technology, and GradFutures. More details to come about a workshop on movement with Syren and lunch with the company.

eSTEAM Scholars Program: A Hands-on Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

Saturday, October 28, 9:00 am -12:00 pm at Princeton Middle School.
