Volume 10

Connecting and Enhancing Community Engagement

Science Outreach will facilitate mutually beneficial and sustainable relationships between Princeton University Science educators and researchers. Science Outreach serves as a nexus connecting faculty, students, and postdocs with youth, schoolteachers, nonprofit organizations, and the broader community with the goal of increasing engagement, participation, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.  Science Outreach supports Astrophysical Sciences, Center for Statistics and Machine Learning, Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Geosciences, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Physics, Princeton Neuroscience Institute, and Psychology.

Exciting News!

The Science Outreach Fellows have been selected. These 18 undergraduate students will engage in ongoing community outreach opportunities for K-12 students in area schools and community programs. The Fellows will receive community volunteer and mentor training along with science facilitation training to enhance their community engagement.

Trenton River Days

Science Outreach volunteer Catherine Hexter, a graduate student in Geosciences, recently volunteered for River Days. River Days is a community-wide event that celebrates and educates students about the Delaware River. Trenton River Days is held in partnership with The Watershed Institute in Pennington, NJ.

Volunteers supported the event by assisting with canoe and boat rides, fly fishing demos, and crafts. Catherine assisted with the fish touch tank (pictured left). This event was held on Saturday, September 16, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at South Riverwalk Park in Trenton.

Partnership with IMAP

Science Outreach has partnered with the Interstellar Mapping Acceleration Probe (IMAP) Outreach Program Team and the Mercer County Boys and Girls Club to host a SUNday STEM Social.

The event will take place on October 14th at the Boys and Girls Club. This is a public event, and participants will study solar particle flow and celestial building materials of the universe and better understand how the heliosphere shields life in the inner solar system from cosmic rays. There will be a solar tent to view the eclipse, telescopes, and hands-on crafts for students of all ages.
