SCOPE Survey Update

Many thanks to all who took the time to complete the SCOPE (Scleral Lenses in Current Ophthalmic Practices:  An Evaluation) survey.  A total of 910 individuals from over 40 countries submitted information through the survey.  79.5% of participants (n=723) reported having fit more than 5 lenses during their careers, and were asked to provide additional information on their scleral lens prescription and management practices. Survey participants reported management and outcomes of over 84,000 scleral lens fits.

Scleral Contact Lens Effects on Central and Peripheral Corneal Thickness

Dr. William L. Miller, Kelsea Vance, Leah Johnson and Jan P. Bergmanson

This study assessed corneal thickness prior to scleral contact lens wear and after two weeks of scleral contact lens wear using tomographic methodology to determine the presence or absence of corneal swelling. Click here for the full poster.

Decreased Clearance  between

Scleral Contact Lens and Cornea after Two Hours of Lens Wear

Dr. Cherie Nau and Dr. Muriel Schornack

Scleral lenses are unique in their ability to maintain  a post-lens fluid reservoir. However, the depth of  that reservoir may change with wear. A significant  reduction in lens clearance after evaluation may  compromise the cornea.

In this study, the change in spacing
between the lens and cornea during the first two
hours of wear is examined. Click here for the full poster.

Membership & Fellowship
How do I get my name listed in the Fitters section of the website?

Membership allows contact lens fitters access to the practitioner's section of the website that contains scleral lens fitting resources.

One of the more common questions we get from members, via the website "Contact Us" or the SLS email (scleralsociety@gmail.com) is "How do I get my name listed in the Fitters section of the website?"

Optometrists, ophthalmologists, and Fellows of the Contact Lens Society of America (FCLSA) who have proven themselves in the field of scleral lens fitting can apply for status as a Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society.

Fellows have submitted a total of three case reports, publications, or presentations and had the submissions approved by the Fellowship Committee. The current Fellowship Chair is Pam Satjawatcharaphong. Detailed instructions are found in the "Practitioners" section of the SLS website.
