Cheers to Spring!
My favorite time of year - a new grape crop is beginning, flowers are blooming, the days are a little longer, baseball begins, new wines will be released and we begin connecting with people a little more often...maybe even through a fun wine tasting experience in your home or office. Is Wine Romance Coming Back? Did it Ever Leave?
I read an article
by Matt Kramer in Wine Spectator Magazine last December discussing Wine Romance and if someone from a previous era would recognize today's wine discussions and conclude that romance in wine is dead in today's world.
"If some Rip Van Wine Winkle from an earlier era, say, the 1960s (never mind the 1920s), suddenly woke up and looked around at wine today, he would be astonished...
But after absorbing all of that, Rip Van Wine Winkle would experience a revelation: What happened to the wine romance? He would find much of the modern discussion of wine to be curiously sterile, even forensic. Everything seemingly would be analytic, dissective and freighted with scientific-isms, such as "phenolic."
"What happened to the romance?" he would ask, baffled and very likely even dismayed. Good question, Rip. The old wine romance, you see, is gone. Or is it?"
This got me thinking, and my first response was "no, it is not dead. He obviously hasn't had lunch or a glass of wine with Jean-Charles Boisset lately!" I'm so fortunate to be connected to Jean-Charles and the Boisset Collection and experience the romance and passion of wine on a regular basis and if you've ever had the chance to meet Jean-Charles I'm sure you feel the same way. I also hope you might have some of that same feeling if you've ever been a part of one of my wine tastings.
What makes you feel romantic about wine? Reply and let me know. I'd love to hear it.
You can check out a video of Jean-Charles and begin to feel his passion for and the romance of wine here:

7 California Restaurants Ranked Among Most Romantic Restaurants in the U.S.
Yes, Valentine's Day is passed, but we're continuing with the "Romance" theme anyway. Maybe this will help you plan for next year.
"So, you're looking to find a spot that's just right for the special someone in your life? If you're going to be in California, you're in luck. The Golden State is home to seven of the 'most romantic' restaurants in the nation, according to a new ranking", and I can personally vouch for one of the restaurants on this list.
Though most of them are in Southern CA, they "offer a variety of fare, from French to continental, to 'contemporary American'." And if you're in San Diego I highly encourage you to check out
Bertrand at Mr. A's, which is located downtown.
"Whether diners are out celebrating Valentine's Day or simply connecting over a flirty dinner, this year's honorees excel at setting the table for romance."
And with names like The Hobbit, Restaurant at Convict Lake and Wally's Desert Turtle it's an intriguing list. Here's the link to the article so you can view the restaurants and plan your next romantic dinner:

"96 Points of Rutherford, California BLISS!"
That's what the Wine Advocate said about the Raymond 2013 Rutherford District Cabernet Sauvignon.
"The 2013 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of black cherry and blackberry with a touch of wet stone. Flavors of dark chocolate syrup and Tahitian vanilla with a mocha finish are complemented with bold, well integrated tannins and a supple mouthfeel. This is a big, gutsy wine that will pair well with seared filet mignon or veal chops
. - 96 Pts. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate"
This wine retails for $85 and is only $68 for Wine Society members.
