Our Journey with Jesus

We sometimes refer to our life as a disciple as a journey. During Holy Week, the week that begins with Palm Sunday, gives us the ultimate opportunity to grow as disciples.

We have no record of the Apostle Paul encountering Jesus during Jesus’s earthly ministry. Yet Paul knew of the journey of discipleship—a journey that led him to proclaim “I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives within me” (Galatians 2:19b-20a).

Jesus invites us all to journey with him this week. Our journey begins this Sunday, Palm Sunday, at 11:00 am, either on-line or in-person.

The journey will continue with an on-line service on Maundy Thursday at 7:00 pm and Good Friday at 12:00 noon.

On Easter Sunday, we will celebrate the Resurrection with a brief on-line Sunrise Service at 7:00 am and our regular Easter Sunday celebration at 11:00 am.

By the way, so that we can ensure that we have room for everyone on Easter Sunday, we are asking you to let Staci know if you plan to attend in person. You can reach her by calling the church office at 434-286-4736, or by email at shainsworth@sumc-va.org. Please let us know if you plan to bring children. We would like to offer an Easter Egg Hunt following the worship service if there is enough interest and/or volunteers, so let us know if you would like to help make this possible.

We pray that this Holy Week will be a time in which you deepen your faith journey as you journey with Jesus.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Tom

We NEED 29 MORE DONORS to hold this event

If you are planning to participate in the SUMC Blood Drive on Thurs., April 1st from 10-4, here are a few things you should know

1.    Newly released RapidPass allows you to start the blood donation process from the comfort of your home or office and answer health history questions before you arrive at the blood drive location –this can shave 15-20 minutes off your donation time! RapidPass must be completed the day of the drive and can be found at www.redcross.org/RapidPass
2.     Remember to eat a good breakfast or lunch, drink plenty of water, and bring a picture ID to the drive.

Sponsor an Inmate's
Bible Study
through
Hope Beyond the Bars

We all deserve to know the
redemptive power & love of our
Lord, Jesus Christ and you can
help make that happen.

To date, we have 17 men registered for our 2nd quarter study:
A Way Through The Wilderness
In 2021 Hope Beyond the Bars began offering a Bible study program for inmates in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Each participant will receive a study book to read on their own and answer study questions. Each week, they will email their answers to the program leader who will compile the answers to share with the group. This will give everyone a chance to see others perspective and insight as we learn and grow in our faith together.

***We had originally planned to increase our quarterly donation for the Bible study participants from $25 to $35. With the number of registrations coming in, we felt it necessary to maintain the $25 amount to include more participants in our ministry, thus getting more men into the Word which is our primary goal. The outline of expenses below takes these changes into account reducing the annual cost by $50 per person.

If you would like to sponsor an inmate, you can choose to donate $100 for Bible study materials or donate $450 to cover all ministry expenses for one year.* UPDATED detailed expenses are spelled out below.

Bible study books & Jpay email stamps for weekly participation are approximately $25 per quarter or $100 per year.
(Jpay is the monitored email system used by the Virginia Department of Corrections)

Additional Program costs per participant are approximately $350 per year and include:
  • Donation to commissary as incentive for continued participation $25 per quarter + $5.95 fee = 123.80 per year
  • Jpay stamps for 3 emails per week with director w/ return stamps $1.50 per week @52 weeks = $78.00 per year
  • 2 cards/letters per month $3.00 per month = $36.00 per year
  • Commissary donation for birthday gift $25 + $5.95 fee = $30.95
  • Commissary donation for Christmas gift $25 + $5.95 fee = $30.95
  • Advent, Lent, and daily devotional materials $50 per year
  • Bible Promises for You book sent upon registration in the program $8
