Union Grove UMC fundraiser

Fundraiser Opportunity to Say Thank You

Union Grove United Methodist Church in Hillsborough has graciously shared their space with Scouting units and the district for several years.

They are looking at some expensive repairs and this fundraising event is for their building & facilities fund. Please consider attending!

Order fundraiser tickets here.

The Union Grove United Methodist Auction/BBQ Dinner Fundraiser is quickly approaching on October 11, 2025. The church would like to get an estimated headcount of scouts/scouters who will be attending. Please send Cynthia Abell-Brown an email at ScouterCAB@gmail.com if you plan to attend, so she can provide the church with approximate numbers. Thank you!

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT CHAIR

You have ANOTHER Scout meeting? The boys (almost 36 and 38 years old) have been out of Scouts for a long time - why do you still do this?

That’s a message I hear from my wife (Donna), every so often. She answered her own question, about 30 years ago.

At the time, we were both working for other people and feeling a bit frustrated that all we were doing was making money for those people. We enjoyed our jobs, but they really weren’t making the world a better place.

When our oldest son, Justin, was Tiger Cub age, we joined a pack. The following year, he moved to a new (just built) school, and I started a Cub Scout pack – Donna took a role on the committee, as treasurer.

The next year, our youngest son, Aaron, became a Tiger Cub and my wife agreed to be the Tiger Den Leader. She had no Scouting experience at all, not even Girl Scouts. However, she jumped in with both feet. She even went to a weekend training course, coming back more confident in her new role and very excited to roll out a Tiger Cub program.

When Aaron moved up to a Wolf den, Donna came along, as the den leader. She stuck with it, as he moved to a Bear den, the following year. Somewhere along the way, she said (paraphrasing, since it was 30 years ago), “You know, I finally feel like I’m doing something good – this has a positive impact.”

That’s it – that statement is the crux of the answer, to her question, “Why do you still do this?” I’m sure that most of you can relate to this – Scouting isn’t just a job you do, but a mission to give back to the community. At the next Roundtable, look at all the people whose kids are long past Scouting age, yet they are still giving to the program.

I know that many of you already have your time full with pack, troop, crew, or ship responsibilities (sometimes, more than one). If you still have a little time left, maybe just an hour a week or so, and would be willing to help out at the district level to give of yourself to a broader audience, we will gladly find a spot for you.

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT EXECUTIVE

Kudos to all units for the exceptional recruiting in September. Last September we brought in 123 new scouts and this year, we ended the month at 140 scouts for September. We have a few units that more than doubled their membership this year, so far!!! And we are not done yet! The month of October is another huge membership month for Scouting. We will continue to connect with K-5 youth while adding our reach to 6th-12th grades. I will be in touch as I set up talks/flyers with the local middle schools. If any leaders already have contacts at the Middle Schools, please let me know. Our council goal for the month of October is 484 scouts -- let's make it 500 and let Eno River lead the way!!!

Coming up this month is the Friends of Scouting Luncheon on Oct. 24 at the Raleigh Convention Center. This year's luncheon is in honor of Bob Barnhill and the Keynote speaker is, the one and only, Terry Bradshaw. I am currently in search of table hosts for the event. If you know of a potential supporter that might host a table of ten, please contact me or share my information with them. Being new to the area, I am working on my connections, so your assistance is greatly appreciated. I want to help Eno River make a great impact in the Occoneechee Scouting Community.

In the coming months, I am planning to visit Units to get to know each of you and your Scouts. If you have any special event that you would like me to visit, please let me know.

My first month has been full of fun and fellowship (with a little bit of work). I am impressed with the wonderful Scouting programs available for youth in our area. Looking forward to many more months of supporting you and your units.

Reach out to me for anything I can do to help.

Yours in Scouting,

Alison Moore

"Be Prepared" isn't just a motto-it's how we keep Scouts safe, confident, and ready for adventure! From hiking rugged trails to camping under the stars, even minor injuries like scrapes, blisters, or insect bites can slow down the fun.

Community Service Opportunities

GREETINGS SCOUTS!!!

As we are rapidly approaching the end of the year we are always on the lookout for more Civic Service Projects! As with our previous request, if you have any projects that you feel would be good opportunities, please relay them to Scott Cook at scottcook467@gmail.com!

To that end we have some great dates and opportunities coming up! Please take some time to review the below dates and potential projects to see if they are something you as a Scout or as a Pack or Troop wish to do!

Also, we want to make sure that all Scouts are able to promote the District's good work! So we strongly wish to encourage all Scout Troops and Packs to register their hours on myscouting.org!

Additionally, the District encourages Scouts to bring along friends, family, classmates, and members of religious congregations to these projects as well!

UPCOMING DATES:

SCOUTING FOR FOOD/TRICK OR TREATING FOR FOOD - This year on top of Scouting For Food we will be encouraging Trick or Treating For Food!!!

Scouting For Food will take place during the first two weeks of November. We are calling on all Scouts to make this a Success!! Additionally, we are asking for all Packs and Troops to keep track of all food items so we can get an accounting of our SUCCESS!! We are asking that those numbers be relayed to Scott Cook at scottcook467@gmail.com.

Trick or Treating for Food will also take place on Halloween! We are asking all Scouts to go out and get as much candy as you can! And, while you're at it, request donations to be delivered to local food banks! As with Scouting For Food, we are asking Packs and Troops to keep track of food donations and relay those numbers to Scott Cook at scottcook467@gmail.com.

You can find local Food Bank links here -- they need extra help this year:
