Acknowledging Environmental Racism Here in San Diego
|
|
"Are you nervous to jog in your own neighborhood because you know deep breaths will bring life-shortening toxins into your lungs?
Do screeching train whistles startle you from sleep at 2 a.m.? Do 18-wheelers drive by your bedroom window at 5 a.m. and make your house rumble?
Do your children maneuver around semi-trucks making dangerous turns in front of them on their way to school?
Do you constantly worry about how limited your children’s lung capacity will be when they reach adulthood?
I do. All the time."
Julie Corrales, San Diego Union Tribune - "Barrio Logan has faced environmental racism for decades. We want justice." Read the full story here.
See also "ZIP codes predict health and National City, Barrio Logan, San Ysidro and City Heights residents are at risk" (here) and listen to "Environmental Racism in San Diego" featured on Latino USA (here)
What is environmental racism?
"Environmental racism refers to how minority group neighborhoods—populated primarily by people of color and members of low-socioeconomic backgrounds—are burdened with disproportionate numbers of hazards including toxic waste facilitates, garbage dumps, and other sources of environmental pollutions and foul odors that lower the quality of life. This can lead to different diseases and cancers. Because of this, as the fight with climate change worsens, minority communities will be disproportionally affected," writes Victoria Peña-Parr (click to view full article).
