The first series of talks will be provided by researchers joining as part of the Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Ghana (COESSING) focusing on efforts to build an international Ocean Peace Corps. During the second event, we'll hear from Scripps and UCSD faculty and community members on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) efforts and visions. Featured speakers for Part 2: Provost Ivan Evans, Ms. Keiara Auzenne, Dr. Amina Schartup, Dr. Jennifer MacKinnon, Ms. Danielle McHaskell, with an address by Dr. Margaret Leinen, Scripps Director. Each set of talks will be followed by a discussion in which audience members can participate. |

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have for long been campuses that provide the environment for Black excellence and prosperity, graduating future leaders in all sectors of society today including our vice-president, Kamala Harris. Despite playing a major role in supporting these students, many are now under-resourced and yet still graduate a large portion of the total number of Black undergrads in the United States. The Anti-Racism Reboot is part of Scripps Oceanography’s ongoing efforts to provide training and learning opportunities to create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive community. Curated from the Chancellor's 21-day Anti-Racism Challenge, this weekly series is tailored for the Scripps community to learn together, with facilitated discussions that will be held weekly where participants can ask questions and process the material. The goal is to assist everyone in furthering their awareness, compassion, understanding, and engagement towards anti-racism.

Lunar New Year, to some known as Chinese New Year, is celebrated in countries across Asia and, for many, is considered the most important holiday of the year. A fun and festive holiday, Lunar New Year festivities actually aren't limited to one specific day. Like its name suggests, this holiday reflects the changing of the year based on the lunar calendar and is generally celebrated between late January and mid February. Its an important time to connect with family and friends, to celebrate what the future holds, dance, sing, eat, and yes - open red envelopes! |

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lila Abron, CEO of PEER Consultants. Dr. Abron is regarded as the "first African-American woman in the nation to earn a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and the first African-American to start an engineering consulting firm focused on the environment and its environmental issues”. Among other events, there will be a screening of Picture a Scientist, which details the work environment for women in academia.

URGE: Unlearning Racism in the Geosciences

URGE's primary objectives are to (1) deepen the community’s knowledge of the effects of racism on the participation and retention of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people in Geoscience, (2) draw on existing literature, expert opinions, and personal experiences to develop anti-racist policies and strategies, and (3) share, discuss, and modify anti-racist policies and strategies within a dynamic community network and on a national stage.

Members of the SIO community have composed a letter to the SIO Administration outlining steps for how anti-racism can be encouraged on our campus. Suggestions span a diversity of topics which fall out across roughly five domains: Culture and Capacity Building, Graduate Student Recruitment & Retention, Undergraduate Student Recruitment & Retention, Hiring Practices for BIPOC Faculty, Post-docs & Staff, and Environmental Responsibility. In appreciation of Black Herstory Month, join the Women’s Center on February 12, 2021 at 1pm in as Gender Buffet presents “Celebrating Joyful Black Art” live on Zoom. We invite Black womxn and black gender non conforming folx to share with the community art that inspires you! Join a Group or Forum
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has a lot of new on-line offerings for either open forums or closed groups. For example, Carly Knauf is offering an ADHD support group this fall on Mondays from 3 - 4pm. She is also offering a “Coping with COVID” workshop on Mondays from 1 - 2pm starting week 2.
