The Anti-Racism Reboot is part of Scripps Oceanography’s ongoing efforts to provide training and learning opportunities to create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive community. Curated from the Chancellor's 21-day Anti-Racism Challenge, this weekly series is tailored for the Scripps community to learn together, with facilitated discussions that will be held weekly where participants can ask questions and process the material. The goal is to assist everyone in furthering their awareness, compassion, understanding, and engagement towards anti-racism.

Developing Engagement through Existing Pipeline Connections Lecture Series explores the many intersections of diversity and science by highlighting the amazing scientific endeavors of traditionally underrepresented and marginalized scholars who are also advocates, actively engaged in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the fields of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences. Join us for an exciting and informative discussion about their work and their EDI-related efforts.

In place of a one-day service event, this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service will be a weeklong series of sessions focusing on service, dialogue, and training. Each event will focus on how to stay meaningfully connected at a local level while virtual.

URGE's primary objectives are to (1) deepen the community’s knowledge of the effects of racism on the participation and retention of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people in Geoscience, (2) draw on existing literature, expert opinions, and personal experiences to develop anti-racist policies and strategies, and (3) share, discuss, and modify anti-racist policies and strategies within a dynamic community network and on a national stage. St. Cloud State University's 12^th Annual Power in Diversity Leadership Conference

Friday - Saturday, January 29th - 30th, 2021. Registration is FREE!

"Over the past few years our country has been divided by numerous issues and this has had a significant impact on our nation. Recently, the murder of George Floyd directly devastated our students and our communities. Our theme, Unleash Justice, invites attendees and presenters to explore and discuss justice issues facing communities of color and oppressed groups." A member of the Central Park Five will open the conference and share his journey and personal experiences fighting for justice. "Crystal Leigh Endsley, activist and professor of Africana Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, will facilitate a full-conference racial caucusing activity and then close the conference with a keynote address."

The first series of talks will be provided by researchers joining as part of the Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Ghana (COESSING) focusing on efforts to build an international Ocean Peace Corps. During the second event, we'll hear from Scripps and UCSD faculty and community members on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) efforts and visions. Featured speakers for Part 2: Provost Ivan Evans, Ms. Keiara Auzenne, Dr. Amina Schartup, Dr. Jennifer MacKinnon, Ms. Danielle McHaskell, with an address by Dr. Margaret Leinen, Scripps Director. Each set of talks will be followed by a discussion in which audience members can participate. Please mark your calendar and watch for registration information sent out in late January. 

During October – Disability Awareness Month – you were invited you to participate in a survey on the “Disability Experience at UC San Diego.” Thank you to all who participated. This survey was intended to collect input for an external review that will take place in January; the review follows up on a recommendation from a workgroup on the disability experience and will help us better support all individuals with disabilities on our campus. WMIS Working Group with Accountabili-Buddies

If you're working from home and are looking for a buddy to work alongside you, look no further. Every Friday WMIS will be paring up attendees with an accountabili-buddy to both network and work towards your goals in that one-hour stretch of time via Zoom. The course is organized by postdoc career development administrators from The Torrey Pines Training Consortium (TPTC), which members include Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP), Scripps Research and UC San Diego. It is designed to equip postdocs and junior faculty in the biomedical, physical and life sciences from the Torrey Pines Mesa institutes with the professional competencies to lead innovative and productive research programs. However, graduate students and research staff may also find this training informative and may attend. Register here.

For example, Carly Knauf is offering an ADHD support group this fall on Mondays from 3 - 4pm. She is also offering a “Coping with COVID” workshop on Mondays from 1 - 2pm starting week 2.
