Sea King Sunday Update

Dear Sea King Families,

This Thursday evening, PVHS will host our Open House event for incoming 9th-grade families, beginning at 6 pm. This is an amazing opportunity for us to show off our academics, signature programs, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. Our phenomenal Live from 205 students are creating their annual videos to showcase our high school programs, which will debut in the gym portion of our event, along with performances from Choreo, Song, Cheer, and Musical Theater. I am excited to show off our Sea King family and the many accomplishments of our students, teachers, coaches, and staff. If you know any 8th-grade families, please encourage them to attend the event and check out all that PVHS has to offer!

It's been a busy start to this second semester as we head into the month of February! Please continue to reach out to us if you or your student should need anything. I hope you enjoy your Sunday.

See you tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Principal

PVHS Students Win Big at the PVP Science and Engineering Fair

The 22nd annual Palos Verdes Peninsula Science and Engineering Fair at Los Verdes Golf Club was held on Thursday. Over 150 students from our school district competed against one another in 108 projects.

PVHS students had forty Top-3 finishes and won an additional fifteen special awards from numerous organizations represented at the event. Thirteen projects will be advancing to the LA County Science Fair next month, with three projects advancing to the ISEF International Science Fair in Dallas this May! A list of all these amazing award winners is below by category.

Congratulations to our 2023 PVPSEF Science Fair Category and Special Award Winners!!

Competing students from PVHS have worked on these projects for countless hours in a Science Research class taught by Mrs. Munoz. We are so proud of each of the Science Research Students for their hard work and dedication to their research topic. A big reason why our students love Science is because of our AMAZING Science teachers so a special thank you to the PVHS Science Department for fostering these students' passions of learning and discovery!

Mia Dominguez Awarded 1st Place for

the Voice of Democracy Contest

On Friday, January 27th, Mia Dominguez was announced as the state winner of the VFW Voice of Democracy speech contest. The prompt for her speech was: Why is the Veteran Important? Mia was awarded a scholarship of $2,000.00 and a trip to Washington DC where she will represent California and compete in the National Championships. Congratulations to Mia on her wonderful accomplishment!

Mrs. Driver's World History AP Class learned about colonial imperialism on Friday by making complex parallels to Star Wars. Students were broken into groups and asked to compare 19th century British and French imperialism to the Empire's actions in the original star wars movies across a series of categories. Students worked together to research and make connections and then constructed poster boards to depict their findings. Mrs. Driver and Mr. Hill watched as the student's understanding of the multiple causes and effects of imperialism grew and students contextualized the content with something they were familiar with and enjoy.

Awesome lesson, Mrs. Driver!

Ms. Wei's Class performed for Lunar New Year at the Botanical Gardens!

January 22, 2023, was Chinese Lunar New Year. Ms. Wei's Chinese students enjoyed various cultural activities. In class, they learned about this most important holiday in Chinese culture in different form of projects; made traditional decorations such as the Spring Scrolls and paper lanterns. Besides making the decorations for their own houses and classroom, they also made enormous Spring Scrolls to decorate our school campus, and share with their teachers, counselors, administrators and other staff at school.

Located in PV, the South Coast Botanic Garden hosted its first Lunar New Year on January 28th and 29th. Ms. Wei's students were invited to perform and run activities at the event. Led by National Chinese Honor Society, our students were in charge of the first day. They performed drums, Kong Fu fan dances and popular Square Dance. They also taught hundreds of people Chinese calligraphy, chopsticks games, traditional board games including Wei Qi (aka Go) and Majiang. All participating students had a great time serving the community. They also enjoyed other professional performances such as Lion Dance and Marshal Arts. This event was totally sold out for both days.
