Skip the Straw to
Save Our Seas
Every day, Americans use 500,000,000 plastic straws and then throw them away. Arranging these straws end-to-end would create a line of plastic over sixty-two thousand miles long. That is enough to circle the Earth 2.5 times per day! These single-use plastic straws are threatening our health, environment, oceans, and sea life.

Strange to think that a little straw can be threatening. . .

Earth Day 2018
NAMEPA was very busy last month celebrating Earth Day to Save Our Seas from marine debris.  Check out what we accomplished through member support, dedicated volunteers and students!

Highlights:
  • 100+ volunteers engaged
  • 5,000+ pounds of trash removed
  • 2.5 miles of land covered
  • 5,644 pieces of trash added to Ocean Conservancy's marine debris database
Volunteers removed over 3900 pounds of trash from the  Westerly Land Trust 's preserve which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean.
With the help of partner groups such as Humanity Now, Garbo Grabber, Skip the Straw, and Surfrider, over 1000 pounds of trash was removed during the  Fairfield Earth Day Festival .
Alumni and current and prospective students from Williams-Mystic worked to remove 60 pounds of trash from a popular surf spot and learned the importance of citizen science.
The Matunuck Elementary School's Junior Girl Scout Troop #560 worked with NAMEPA and other environmental groups to provide four free showings of A Plastic Ocean , followed by a panel discussion.
The URI Earth Day Festival brought students and environmental groups together to discuss marine pollution, ocean sciences, and ways to be a better environmental steward.
Did you know that 80% of Marine Debris originates from land-based sources? It is washed into waterways during rain events, or blown to waterways in the wind!
