Getting Our Sacred Home In Order
(this is the "Hotlink," in the email subject line)
|
|
The core of who we are and what we do has not changed and our foundation after all these years remains strong. But some weak spots that are emerging, places where years or decades of deferred maintenance is causing things to crumble. We’ve had several reminders this year that things cannot operate indefinitely without proper maintenance and attention.
If a crumbling sidewalk can teach us anything about where we are as a parish, it is time for us to get our house in order. For too long, we have band-aided broken and outdated infrastructure, cobbled together lesson plans and social activities based on how close they are to free, underfunded our outreach projects, and underpaid our staff or tried to do without necessary staff positions.
Most of us who are here week after week ever think about how slim our financial resources actually are. We walk into the narthex and the lights are on, the bulletins are freshly printed, and the organ is already making beautiful music. We grab a couple donut holes and a cup of coffee and don’t think about the fact that all those things we’ve come to enjoy and expect cost money.
But it is more than just deferred maintenance and facilities.
It’s about Formation and Education, Outreach, Salaries, Music and the Arts — in other words, our LIFE IN COMMUNITY.

A Reflection from Chaplain Erin
|
|
The Liturgical calendar reminds us that our time in the church is ordered. We know that each season passes into the next, and our work as Christians in the community continues. We are currently in Year A. Year B will begin with the season of Advent. Christmas will follow Advent, and the Ordinary time following Epiphany will start after that. Year B will end, Year C will begin, and the circle will continue to spin as we start Year A again.
For me, the beauty of the Liturgical calendar is found in the pattern and repetition. (I know you can’t hear it, but the song “Sunrise, Sunset” is playing in my head right now.) There’s a calm that comes with the knowledge that Christmas comes every year. All my hopes and dreams for it don’t have to happen all at once. The same can be said for any of our traditions. The very nature of a “tradition” is that it occurs on a regular basis.
Why is she talking about this?
This time of year, we have so many things for which to be thankful. We have family feasts, gatherings with friends, beautiful weather, and a wonderful church community. The blessings are coming at us at an extraordinary pace.
There is so much to do to get ready. We need to do some maintenance and lay some groundwork as we prepare for our future. As we look around, we see everything that needs to be done. Sometimes, it feels overwhelming.
This is when it helps to remind ourselves that although things need to be done, it does not all need to happen at once and not just by one person. We live in a community in which we all can be a part of building toward the future. No one has to do it alone. If we all work together, we can make this church, this community, and this season one of joy and wonder.
Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

PRISON MINISTRY ANGEL TREE PROJECT!
2023 marks the 9th year that All Saints’ has participated in Angel Tree and it is going to be a big year! This year, our parish will provide Christmas gifts to 80 children who are separated from their parent through incarceration. Many of the children we serve are being raised by a single parent, a grandparent, foster parent or distant relative and the gift we give them serves as an important connection to their incarcerated parent. For the adults caring for the children, our gifts
are welcome assistance when resources are limited.
There are 4 ways to support Angel Tree: there are still some TAGS left
1) Purchase a gift for an Angel Tree child ($60-75 maximum).
2) Purchase a $25 Walmart gift card for an Angel Tree family.
3) Bake cookies for our Angel Tree families.
4) Write a check to All Saints’ (write “Angel Tree” in the memo) and the youth group will purchase a gift for an Angel Tree child on your behalf.
Many, many thanks for all you do to make Christmas a joyful time for our Angel Tree families! Contact Lora Villasenor at lmvillasenor@msn.com.

BE AN ANGEL
FOR MARYLAND GARDENS NURSING HOME NEXT DOOR!
Starting Thanksgiving Weekend through December 14! Many of the dear residents next door have little or no local family, and spend the holidays in the confines of the facility. Please take a tag or two from the Christmas tree in the narthex/lobby and shop for a little extra joy for a neighbor this Christmas! Don't forget to sign your tag out on the sign-out sheet near the tree, and bring back your gift, wrapped and tagged, by December 14. Please use the tag specifying the resident’s name, gender, and size. We are asking for purchases of a winter sweat shirt & pants combo, or a lounging outfit that is comfy, along with anything specified on their list.

I Know Why They Didn't Ask Me
In my almost 25 years at All Saints', I have not been asked to comment on pledging or stewardship. Probably, rightly so. But you know me. I have an opinion on everything.
In my former advertising agency, we were like a store. There was a menu of items companies would come to us for. But what we mostly sold were intangibles. Ideas. Creative concepts. And of course, clients would purchase the tangible manifestations of those ideas and creativity. We set a value for that based on what time and resources it would require to produce the desired results.
All Saints' is also a store. Not like Home Depot where you go in and choose which hammer from a dozen choices. You don't negotiate prices at our American retail stores. You usually pay for what you get. At All Saints', our products are intangible. There is no set value on any of it. The peace, comfort, friendships, knowledge, structure, discipline, joy, salvation, and refreshment are all very personal and unique to each one of us. But like all other retail stores, my ad agency, or this church, there is a cost for providing these services. While we may not think about it in those terms, we all know everything has a cost. So our monthly expenses are like yours. Always going up and always present on that balance sheet. But we will always continue to strive to make All Saints' the Kingdom of God on earth.
Many people have a distrust for "paying for intangibles." They feel it may be a rip-off, that giving to religious organizations is a scam. But the reality is if you are deriving anything special from your attendance and participation, there is an intrinsic value. You have to weigh what it is worth and what your life would be like without it. If the comfort you get from knowing a significant group of people care about you, your loved ones, and your well-being, through the good times and the bad, in sickness and in health, at all the major touchpoints of your life, what is that worth to you? The power of community is so much more important than I ever realized before my All Saints' experience.
It is a matter of balancing the practical reasons we purchase things with the spiritual, intangible, life-giving support that helps you calculate an estimate of giving for an annual pledge. Father Carl used to say if you've got a lot, give a lot. If you are really tight and need to feed the family, take care of yourselves first. When you have more, share more. If you are having trouble, don't put yourself at risk. I always felt comfort in his words.
I love this place. I give of my time (lots of it), my talents (that's a subjective term, but I share everything I have), and my treasure (a monthly pledge that I occasionally augment with various fundraisers or outreach gifts). I feel my life would not be the same if this holy place did not exist. And I will do everything in my power to make sure it does. Won't you join me in doing the same?
* * *
Thank you for allowing ALL SAINTS' to be your source for meaningful worship and an ever-present light of Christ in the world -- wherever you may be. May God bless you.
Faithfully yours,
Nanette Kryske Towsley
Your Director of Communications
