We are queer people reclaiming our spirits from weaponized religion

Dear Soulforce,

This year we’ve shed oceans of tears—of pain, frustration, fear, courage, laughter, gratitude, and grief. We celebrated trans baptisms and queer weddings, had hard conversations about the traumas we carry in our bodies, and attended memorial services, protests, and workshops. Together with activists from around the world, we strategized on how to make life more possible in the midst of so many ongoing tragedies.

For many of us, these times feel apocalyptic, and it is easy to lose heart when hope feels like folly. But our tears help us remember our humanity. It is said that human beings are the only species that cries emotional tears. As infants, we cry for help. But as adults, our vulnerability is harder to admit. Our tears honor life’s tenderness and remind us what is important.

At Soulforce, healing our communities from the wounds of weaponized religion is not just an abstract dream, but something we do every day. I can’t tell you how many people come back to us years later with stories of how Soulforce changed their lives, how it saved their lives. This work is so important and we can only do it with your support. As we prepare for the journey ahead, your commitment is more crucial than ever. I invite you to join us in creating waves of change by donating today.

The world we dream of and fight for is real. We are co-creating it every single day. Your generosity makes it possible, and we are grateful for your commitment to this life-saving work.

With hearts ablaze and spirits unyielding,

Alba Onofrio

Executive Director

TeologĂa Sin VergĂĽenza's International Gathering of Queer & Feminist Theologians

Thank you to all of our partners, volunteers, performers, and participants that helped to make the Teología Sin Vergüenza's “Somos Muchxs” international gathering possible! With more than 100 people gathered from 12 countries throughout Latin America and its diaspora in the US, this 3 day in-person retreat celebrated three years of building a vibrant community dedicated to queer and feminist theology in Spanish.

Through collaborative conversations, performance, and collective worship, participants worked to share experiences and ideas for theological resistance against oppressive systems in the academy, in the church, and in on-the-ground activism.

In the photo on the right, we can see members of one of TSV's micrograntees: Coletivo Mulheres EIG, from Brazil. Mulheres EIG members are evangelists advocating for gender equality. We are so thankful for the work of EIG and all of our collaborating partners!

Teología Sin Vergüenza's Culto Cuir in México City

This event brought together an intersection of feminist and LGBTQIA+ believers, activists, and theologians from various countries in Latin America, representing diverse sexual, gender, ethnic, and cultural identities. Participants included pastors, theologians, activists, and allies who engaged in ritual and performances that redefined sacredness and resistance.

Spirits Unyielding Bilingual Blog

In our latest blog post, Karina Vargas Espinoza shares insights from Soulforce's recent programming on the ground in Manila, Philippines. We examine how religious spaces often promote the concept of 'normal' as a tool of colonial power. This enforcement of 'normal' can lead to ideas of heteronormativity, ableism, sexism, and racism. We are continuously grateful to every person and entity that sees the value in our mission! We are proud to share that our funding sources are diverse: coming from individual donors, family foundations, and philanthropic groups across the United States.
