L’occasione fa il ladro
A case of identity theft

The season starts with one of our favorite composer's one-act operas, Rossini's L'occasione fa il ladro. This story about a identity theft features Berenice who is engaged to marry Count Alberto, whom she has never met. Two suitors, both claiming to be Alberto, show up at her house. Who is the real Alberto and who is imposter?

This will be OUTDOORS at the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History Amphitheater.

For an additional charge, enjoy food and drinks before the event on the beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the Amphitheatre. Artistic Director Anthony Barrese will give a brief talk.

Doors for the pre-show event will open at 5:30pm. Tapas will be served at 6:00pm.

Catering provided by Slate at the museum.

Bluebeard's Castle
Duke (not a pirate)

Enter Bluebeard's Castle if you dare! Bartók's chilling one-act opera is the story of Judith, the young new wife of the menacing Duke Bluebeard, who unlocks the seven forbidden doors in her husband's castle and is eventually confronted by the women he has already loved. The production has us working in collaboration with set designers from Meow Wolf. This gothic horror is perfect for the Halloween season. Join us in the lobby of the National Hispanic Cultural Center for an afterparty with food and a cash bar.

Before Night Falls
A poet in love with the moon

Before Night Falls by Jorge Martín, is based on the autobiography of Reinaldo Arenas, a gay Cuban novelist, poet, playwright, political dissident and prisoner. The story follows his childhood in Cuba, his time in prison and his escape to the United States. Arenas is determined to stave off death to finish his work "Before Night Falls".

This opera will be produced in collaboration with the New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus (NMGMC). They have been an empowering voice in Albuquerque since 1981, with their mission to reduce intolerance through musical performance.

Carmen
For the love of an independent woman

Carmen is one of the most popular operas of our time. “Habanera” and “Toreador song” are well-known arias that linger in your mind long after the performance is over.

The controversial themes of rebellion, immorality, and the tragic death of the main character shocked French audiences when it was initially performed. The opera's popularity and the main character's notoriety left lasting impressions on audiences for decades.

The story revolves around a passionate love triangle between Carmen, a seductive cigarette girl, Don Jose, a solider, and Escamillo, a handsome bullfighter. Despite Don Jose's efforts to resist her charms, he succumbs to Carmen's enchantment, resulting in his downfall and Carmen's demise.

Our presentation of Carmen will be in Spanish. The translation by Eduardo de Bray dates to 1904 and comes from a Barcelona zarzuela company.
