Season of Creation - Week 5

Another Chance to Pay Attention

Welcome to the Final Week on this Season of Creation

Our Focus this week: Another Chance

Maybe you read every reflection we shared during these past weeks.

Maybe you read one or two.

Maybe you opened them, meant to come back later, and never did.

Maybe you shared something that stayed with you.

Maybe you read a reflection and forgot about it ten minutes later.

Or maybe you deleted the emails without opening them at all.

We understand. :)

Our days are full. Our attention is pulled in countless directions. There is always another email, another headline, another crisis, another responsibility, another person who needs something from us.

At the very beginning of the Season of Creation, we asked:

Do we really need one more thing to pay attention to?

Five weeks later, perhaps that is still the right question.

MAYBE WE JUST MISUNDERSTAND ATTENTION...

We can sometimes treat awareness as though it requires us to become deeply informed about everything.

It doesn't.

None of us can carry every war, every disaster, every injustice, every environmental concern, every need in our communities, and every difficulty in the lives of the people we love.

Trying to care about everything, all the time, can eventually leave us unable to give much attention to anything.

The Season of Creation was never meant to add another weight to that load. It offers something much simpler: a chance to practice noticing what is already around us.

Water gave us one place to begin because it is ordinary, necessary, shared, and very easy to take for granted. But the practice of paying attention can take us much further.

YOU DIDN'T MISS IT

If you didn't follow these reflections every week, you didn't fail the journey. If you haven't changed a habit, joined an organization, read a book, attended an event, or done anything particularly “environmental,” you haven't missed your opportunity.

This moment is another opportunity. Look around.

  • What have you been too busy to notice?
  • What have you heard about but never really tried to understand?
  • Whose experience have you dismissed because it felt too distant from your own?
  • What have you become accustomed to receiving without thinking about what makes it possible?
  • What concern keeps catching your attention, even when you would rather move on?

Start there.

Not with everything. With something.

AND THEN?

Perhaps this is where the four movements we have used throughout these weeks become useful beyond the Season of Creation:

  • NOTICE: Pay attention before passing by.
  • LEARN: Become curious before deciding that you already understand.
  • PRAY: Give what you have noticed enough space to move from your head toward your heart.
  • RESPOND: Ask whether there is something—however small—that is actually yours to do.

And then begin again.

Because attention is not something we accomplish once.

We lose it.

We get distracted.

We become busy.

We forget.

And then we notice again.

OCTOBER 4 IS NOT A DEADLINE

The Season of Creation ends this week, on October 4. But, remember, there is nothing to finish by then. No checklist to complete. No score to keep. No reason to look back and decide whether we “did enough.”

Maybe the value of a season like this is simply that, for a little while, it interrupts us. It asks us to look again at something we thought we already knew. And then it sends us back into ordinary life a little more awake to what is there.

So, whether you have been with us for all five weeks or this is the first reflection you have really stopped to read, this is not the end of your opportunity.

It is another chance to begin.

And this time, we leave you not with another task, but with one final question: What deserves my attention now?
