Season of Sharing
Dearest Thornton Creek families and caregivers,

My greatest joy this fall has been to see so many of our students, staff and volunteers in our building doing all the school things. With October behind us, we enter what I like to call the Season of Sharing. In this season, we can slow down a little from our busy days to connect with friends and family, look through piles of art projects our students have brought home this fall and celebrate over special foods at our family and community tables.

Each fall, the Thornton Creek Parent Group sponsors our Annual Appeal fundraiser to solicit and replenish the much-relied upon funds that make it possible for us to function as an option school. Today, I am asking for your support. Contributions of any size make a difference. Ultimately we measure our success through participation and are grateful for each and every gift.

A large part of what makes our community special is our Expeditionary Learning model and its focus on and commitment to each student’s well-being: academically, socially and emotionally. The funds we raise will be put into service for advancing our Expeditionary Learning program, providing academic support and sponsoring teacher professional development.

As one of your Thornton Creek Parent Group leaders, I am grateful for each of you and all you do to help make our school an intentional and positive community for the students and staff. Because we are an option school, Thornton Creek can't be the school it is without your help and support. Whatever your chosen engagement: attending a school event, volunteering, building community with other parents/caregivers or making a monetary donation, it is all SO important for our success. Thank you for sharing your time, talents and energy to help our students thrive.

In partnership and with gratitude,

Erin MacDougall

Dragonflies See in Technicolor!
Have you been enjoying the reds, purples and oranges of the Autumn leaves? Our world as we see it is so colorful. It's hard to imagine that the dragonfly's world is more colorful still!

The palette that humans enjoy when observing our world depends on light-sensitive proteins called opsins, each of which absorb a single color: red, green or blue. Objects in our surroundings reflect light at many different wavelengths causing these three colors to mix and blend, resulting in seemingly different colors - some dragonflies have 4 or 5! These additional opsins dramatically expand a dragonfly's ability to see color, including ultraviolet light and even polarization of light.

While we can only guess at why a dragonfly is helped by these cool compound eyes (maybe for hunting or navigation?!) I think we can safely say that dragonflies are living in technicolor.

To read more about these amazing compound eyes, check out this great article below.
30,000 Facets Give Dragonflies A Different Perspective:...

Color vision in humans depends upon three light-sensitive proteins, called opsins, that are present in our retinas. Each type of opsin absorbs one color of light in the spectrum. In humans, the colors absorbed by these opsins are red, green or blue.

Fundraising: Annual Appeal Update
Check out Skimmy's progress below on our map. To date, we have raised $25,521 and are 15% toward our goal!
We love Thornton Creek Elementary! Our teachers, students and Expeditionary Learning model inspire daily. Like all public schools, parent financial support provides stability in staffing and learning. Our Annual Appeal fundraiser replenishes much-relied upon funds. I hope you will consider making a donation. Contributions of any size matter and make a difference. This year, we have a goal to raise $175,000 in support of TC. An average gift of $425 per student would allow us to reach our goal. Ultimately, we measure our success through participation and are grateful for each and every gift.
