Visually representing research is normally done through illustrations, figures or graphs, but for our two book series with Springer we put the meaning of our research into the eyes and hands of Tampa Bay artists for a new perspective.
Ten custom art pieces will represent some of the book's sections. Combining abstract, expressionism, and realism shows the variety of research within C-IMAGE.

The final pieces will be permanently displayed at the University of South Florida-College of Marine Science. A temporary display will be hosted at the USFSP Poynter Memorial Library in St. Petersburg, FL in March.

'Two Sea Fans' Podcast features Dr. Dana Wetzel
|
Mote Marine Laboratory Senior Scientist Dr. Dana Wetzel investigates the presence and impacts of contaminants — including oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico — as one key focus of her Environmental Laboratory for Forensics based at Mote’s Sarasota, Florida, campus.
In this episode, hosts Joe and Hayley ask Dr. Wetzel about the questions her lab is working to answer, including the latest steps in long-running research in partnership with Dr. Kevan Main, focusing on oil exposure in fishes.

2018 St. Petersburg Science Festival
|

Each October since 2012, C-IMAGE joins the
St. Petersburg Science Festival to welcome children and families from across the Tampa Bay region to learn about the science happening in their community.
C-IMAGE's lead PI, Steve Murawski, organized Murawski's Minions to share oil spill research through creating 'sediment core form the ocean floor' necklaces, otolith slides, 3D-printed foraminifera, and origami fortune tellers. This year's festival also featured clips from the
Dispatches from the Gulf
films and a Q&A session with videographer Bill Mills and PhD student Susan Snyder.
The C-IMAGE group again partnered with the
C-SCAMP Project to offer 3D goggle experience at identifying fishes in protected areas in the Gulf.

MarCuba Conference Welcomes International Collaboration
|
Researchers and students represented C-IMAGE
10 presentations about the ongoing collaborations between Universities around the Gulf of Mexico examined the present state of Cuban waters and preparations for the future.
Presentations covered the topics of establishing sedimentary baselines, sustainable fishing practices, toxicity in bottom-dwelling fishes, and tracing contaminate trends in northwest Cuba.

MOSSFA Synthesis Workshop Connects Industry, Response & Restoration, and Academia
|
Hosted in Galveston, TX, the MOSSFA Synthesis Workshop invited 45 individuals to discuss the formation, sedimentation, modeling, and response during MOSSFA events.
Organizers from the
ADDOMeX and C-IMAGE Consortia and a
GoMRI RFP-V project provided a platform for members of academia, industry, and government to share their unique perspectives while providing next steps as part of GoMRI Synthesis and Legacy.

Fishing Research Expedition benefits St. Petersburg Salvation Army
|
During a collaborative cruise the the
DEEPEND Consortium, several hundred pounds of pelagic fishes were caught to study
nightly vertical migration and fish health. For our studies, researchers only use a small sample of muscle tissue in addition to livers, bile, otoliths, and spleen for analysis.
To donate the remaining fish meat (mostly from Tuna), C-IMAGE researchers adapted processing methods to align with HACCP protocols. Once back in port in St. Petersburg, FL the frozen fish meat was sent to a local fish cleaning and processing business where it was formally processed for consumption.
Salvation Army accepted the donation form this research expedition which went to the Area Command for the Adult Rehab Center and packaged meals for Foster Families.
