December's Artist of the Month
Through the end of the year, we'll be showing the photography of local resident Ian Wickstead.
Ian Wickstead has been photographing in and around the Hudson Valley for over 20 years. Early on, the work of Edward Weston and Wynn Bullock inspired him to explore landscapes with a focus on form and light. Over time, his approach shifted toward more abstract and impressionistic imagery, expanding into a range of subjects and styles. He lives in Poughkeepsie, where he continues to develop his photographic practice through ongoing observation and experimentation.
We are always looking for new artists who want to display their work in the Library! Please email programs@pvlibrary.org for more information.

Wrecked and Abandoned: Virtual History Talk
w/ the Hudson River Maritime Museum
Monday, December 8th @ 6pm
| | |
In the 19th century, Rondout Creek was a center of transportation and industry. The entrance to the over 100-mile-long Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Canal was accessed through Rondout Creek, in Kingston, allowing barges carrying thousands of tons of Pennsylvania coal, Hudson Valley bricks, and other resources between the two ends of the canal. The Mary Powell, one of the “floating palaces”, as these large passenger steamboats were called, had its home port in Kingston and brought thousands of passengers across the Hudson River to New York City and back every year. Hundreds of sloops and schooners sailed the Hudson River, many travelling back and forth in Rondout Creek. Over the years, many boats and barges have been neglected, left to rot on the creek. Accidents were unfortunately inevitable, and the Rondout Creek and Hudson River are home to a plethora of forgotten, wrecked, and abandoned vessels.
Sponsored by Dutchess County Library Association, this special virtual program will be screened at the Pleasant Valley Library on Monday, December 8th at 6pm. If you would like to watch the presentation here at the Library, please register here.
If you would rather watch this presentation from home, please click here to sign up to receive the Zoom link by email.
