Hello everyone—I'm Derek Appelblatt, the DDS from across the parking lot you’ll often spot squeezing in a quick 25-minute workout during my lunch break. Though I grew up in Sacramento, I’ve been coming to Tahoe since I was born, and my earliest memories here go back to toddlerhood. After graduating from dental school in San Francisco in 2018, I jumped at the chance to join Nicole Gordon’s practice here in Tahoe in 2020. I’ve always been more drawn to mountains than city streets.
My love for mountain recreation started with rock climbing, which gradually evolved into mountaineering. These days, I’ve ventured into a lesser-known extreme sport called speed flying—paragliding’s more exhilarating cousin—and yes, I do that too.
| | |
Like other downhill sports we all enjoy, speed flying is all about gaining altitude—whether by hiking, driving, or riding a lift—so you can enjoy the thrilling descent. Instead of fresh snow, we chase “sky-pow,” that smooth, still morning air that lets your wing carve through the atmosphere much like your favorite powder tool carves through snow.
The real pro move, though, is adding skis to the mix—combining sky-pow with snow-pow in what’s called speed riding. This three-dimensional skiing has been featured in Warren Miller films thanks to local pro JT Holmes. With only an estimated 3,000–5,000 pilots worldwide, it’s fair to call this sport niche. The Alps serve as its ground zero, thanks to terrain that sits above the tree line and the tireless advocacy of speed riding pioneer Francois Bon, who has helped make the sport welcome at European ski resorts over the last decade.
For me, staying fit means staying safe so I can keep playing in the mountains, because a playful life is a joyful one. A big thank you to everyone at Club 100 for creating such a warm and welcoming community.
| | | M E M B E R • S P O T L I G H T | | WHERE STRENGTH MEETS TRAIL | Hello, my name is Vincent Perry. I’ve had a huge passion for fitness ever since I was a kid. My mother was a big ultra runner when I was growing up and really inspired me and my four younger siblings to become distance runners in high school. Trail running fostered a passion for the outdoors and really opened my eyes to blending fitness with nature. I moved out west from upstate New York about ten years ago and discovered just how much Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area had to offer in regard to outdoor activities. Some of my favorites are skiing, mountain biking, and trail running. I recently got married about a year ago to my lovely wife, Sydney, and we’re so excited to announce that we are expecting a baby boy in late April. |
| "My best days are always the ones where I can get a workout first thing in the morning." ~Vince | | |
I spent the last six seasons working with TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association), building mountain bike trails in the summer and working lifts at Heavenly with Vail. Recently, my wife and I bought our first home together on Kingsbury, which is when I discovered how amazing the gym and community at Club 100 truly are.
My best days are always the ones where I can get a workout in first thing in the morning. The gym and all the outdoor activities Tahoe has to offer go hand in hand for me—whether it’s working on my deadlifts so I can flip bigger rocks for trail building, or keeping my shoulders healthy to shovel out the lifts at Heavenly. The gym and weightlifting allow me to do all of it with ease.
I’m currently on a side quest to break a weighted pull-up record. The progress is slow and steady and may take years, but the journey—and having a goal to work toward—is what keeps me motivated.

Hi, I’m Carly—coach, lifter, and the human behind Moxie Barbell. If you asked me what 2025 would look like, I would’ve said “ski days and strong lifts.” Instead, 2025 turned into an ACL surgery year and a full-on lesson in rebuilding trust with my body.
My husband, Michael, and I moved to Tahoe last year because we were excited to make skiing and biking part of our actual lives instead of just a weekend-warrior thing. Then the ACL injury happened six weeks after our move, so the “Tahoe era” started off a little differently than planned.

Recovery has been extremely humbling.
A huge part of what I help people work toward as a coach is building the confidence that their body won’t be the thing that holds them back from doing what they love. I’ve never really questioned my body’s abilities, so for the first time, being limited by what my body could do genuinely rocked my identity. It’s also forced me to practice what I preach—showing up consistently, celebrating the non-dramatic wins, and learning how to adapt without quitting.
That’s also the heartbeat of how I coach.
I lead with the psychology of behavior change because most people don’t need more information; they need help bridging the gap between intention and follow-through in a way that works in real life. My goal is to help people build a relationship with training and nutrition that feels supportive instead of punishing—creating a process they actually enjoy, developing self-compassion, and working through the deeply rooted mindsets that have been keeping them stuck. Less guilt, more confidence, and a mindset that’s kind enough to be sustainable.
| | | | I coach people who are tired of the all-or-nothing cycle and want something that lasts—a plan that fits your lifestyle, evolves when life changes, and helps you feel good in your body without needing to hate yourself into changing. | | M E M B E R • S P O T L I G H T | | Watch Seamus lift—click here | | Hi, my name is Seamus Breslin, and I’m originally from Philadelphia and now live and train in South Lake Tahoe. For a majority of my life, I ran competitively in cross-country and track and field, and also skied a lot, as it was part of my job as a ski instructor and lift operator for a few years. | | |
I very slowly made the transition into lifting weights because it made me feel better than the other forms of exercise I was used to doing. Soon after moving to Lake Tahoe, I discovered Olympic weightlifting and was immediately hooked on the sport. It has been 2½ years since I started training specifically in weightlifting, and I am the strongest—physically and mentally—that I have ever been in my life, with only more to come.
I am preparing for my first weightlifting competition in February 2026, and I am really looking forward to it. I don’t see an end in sight with weightlifting or the journey I’m on. I always try to keep my head up and my eyes forward, focusing on what matters most in my life—whether that’s weightlifting goals, career, or relationships with the people around me.

Give infrared saunas a go
Rest is not a luxury—it is imperative to health and well-being. In a world where we push ourselves to the limit day in and day out, we must also think about what we can do to unwind and recover. Infrared saunas offer deeply effective rest for many reasons.
Sauna, stillness, and silence have the power to increase your overall state of well-being. It’s a countercultural message, but it could be just what you need to perform at your best in all facets of life. Infrared saunas are the perfect space to stack your recovery and rest habits. You can listen to relaxing music, meditate, or work on your breathing—all from the comfort of your own infrared sauna.
Besides the mental benefits, infrared saunas are also proven to help with muscle recovery. Infrared sauna therapy penetrates muscles more deeply, increases blood flow, and helps the body recover faster so you can stay in the game—of both sports and life.
