Back from virtual extinction
In 1990, Edwin Duffus, pig hunter, walked into Jamaica’s Hope Zoo in Kingston and handed over a rather large lizard that had long been declared extinct – since 1948. The UNDP-implemented Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) joined the exciting recovery and preservation effort in 2012, and in 2018 is now reaping stunning results with potential impact on local biodiversity
