Jen Hatmaker Coming Thursday, April 9
We are thrilled to welcome Jen Hatmaker to our campus. Jen has been a steady and meaningful voice for many women over the last twenty years, and her heart for people is unmistakable. Learn more about her, explore her new book, and get your tickets so you can hear her for yourself.
An email will be sent to the congregation on Monday, 12/1, with the ticket link once it goes live.
Jen Hatmaker is a bestselling author, beloved podcaster, dynamic speaker, educator, activist, and mother of five, equal parts powerhouse and heart on her sleeve.
Across her 15 books, including five New York Times bestsellers, Jen has become a trusted guide for millions of women navigating life, faith, and reinvention. Whether she’s teaching transformative courses, hosting her lively book club, or leading conversations with thought leaders on her award winning For the Love podcast, she brings humor, grit, and a relentless commitment to authenticity.
Her core belief is simple, when women walk in freedom and agency, they change everything. Fully alive, fully themselves, women become one of the world’s greatest gifts.
Her most personal work yet, AWAKE: A Memoir, released September 23, 2025. Told in raw, real time vignettes, it captures her journey through disruption, reinvention, and the surprising liberation of beginning again.
A few other things you should know about Jen, she still uses a paper calendar and her original AOL email. She loves cooking from scratch, but will still inhale a Totino’s pizza without apology. She has a soft spot for 90s country, prefers her concerts seated, and is happily empty nesting in a creaky 1908 farmhouse that was once full of teenagers. Her first favorite book was The Secret Garden. And she takes her coffee with Almond Joy creamer and has no plans to change.

Pastor Carrie’s Holiday Open House
Sunday, December 7, 2–6 PM | 5414 90th St., Lubbock, TX 79424
Some of my earliest memories are of church friends gathered in our home. It was as natural to see our senior pastor as it was our closest friends. When I entered ministry, I carried that same tradition—hosting parent socials, Sunday School parties, Bible studies, and girls’ nights.
I hope you’ll stop by for my Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 7, from 2–6 PM. Come enjoy some sweet treats, meet new friends, and celebrate the season together. No RSVP required.
Peace,
Carrie

Advent Missions Offering
November 30 to December 23
This Advent Season, we invite you to give to our Advent Missions Offering, a tradition that helps us support neighbors near and far. Your gifts will benefit the South Plains Food Bank, Lubbock Habitat for Humanity, and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Global Offering. These partners provide food, housing, and long-term support for families and communities in need.
Your generosity makes a meaningful difference during this season of hope. When giving, please designate your gift as Advent Offering so it can be directed to these mission partners.

On Wednesday, December 3, we will welcome representatives from the South Plains Food Bank and Lubbock Habitat for Humanity and watch a short video from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. You will hear stories of their work, learn how our support strengthens their efforts, and discover new ways we can be in prayer for those they serve. It will be a meaningful night for all ages as we listen, learn, and celebrate how our shared ministry extends across Lubbock and beyond.

Tidings of Joy: All Church Christmas Caroling
Sunday, December 14 at 4:00 pm | Meet in the Worship Hall
Bundle up and join us for Tidings of Joy, our annual all-church Christmas caroling event. We’ll gather in the Worship Hall before heading out to share songs of hope, joy, and love with members of our community. It’s one of the most heartwarming traditions of the season, open to all ages and voices!
After caroling, return to the church for Breakfast for Supper with Santa in the Grand Hall at 5:30 PM. Enjoy pancakes, bacon, and plenty of Christmas cheer while little ones visit with Santa and take photos.
Come sing, celebrate, and share the joy of Christmas together at Second B.

Wandering & Wondering
November 28, 2025
A few weeks ago I was chatting with a long-time Second Baptist member about my sermon writing process. It was the first time I had spelled it out so clearly. They suggested I share it with you. At first I thought no one would be interested, but the more I sat with it, the more I wondered, “well, maybe you are.”
So beginning with Advent 1, I’ll share the text and title for each Sunday, inviting you to read and pray alongside me as we prepare to worship together.
Here is my process:
Each week I follow the ancient practice of Lectio Divina, Divine Reading.
I start by reading the scripture in a few different translations and writing down any words or phrases that stand out. I read again and note the questions that come up, the things I want to study. Then I read once more and pay attention to how the scripture affects me, what it stirs up.
After that I read three commentaries, sometimes four if I need more context or clarity. Along the way I’m taking notes, jotting ideas, and writing down questions. So many questions.
Then I sit and let everything marinate, usually on Wednesday, after the earlier steps on Monday and Tuesday. By Thursday, I start pulling it all together.
Through all of this, I’m seeing you, praying for you, and remembering our life together.
So I invite you to join me each week in reading and praying the text we’ll explore in worship. I invite you to wonder with me, to stay curious about what God is doing and saying in the scriptures. We may be surprised by it all.
Advent One: Hope
Scripture: Matthew 1:1–17
Missions Night, December 3
Join us as several of our mission partners share updates, stories, and ways our support is making a tangible difference. It’s a meaningful chance to connect with the ministries we walk alongside and to celebrate the work happening through your generosity.
Church Conference and Last Wednesday Dinner, December 10
Gather with us for our final Wednesday night of 2025. We will share a meal together before our end-of-year church conference, which will include reports and the vote on the 2026 budget.
Peace,
Pastor Carrie

Advent Devotion Link
The stories and traditions of the Christmas season connect us across generations. They invite us to remember the ways God has shown up in the past and to look for God’s presence in our lives today. This year we are using a devotional series called From Generation to Generation. It encourages us to reflect on what we have received from those who came before us and what we will pass on to those who follow.
You can view the devotional on our website, secondb.org/advent, or you can click the button below. We will also have printed copies available on the table at the entrance of the Worship Hall.
We hope this devotional nurtures your spirit and brings you closer to God during this sacred season.

Giving Tuesday
December 2, 2025
Has your email and phone been flooded with Giving Tuesday requests this week? Mine have, from my undergraduate and my seminary, from ministries I’ve supported, and from organizations hoping I’ll start. It’s hard to say which matters more than another.
Except this. I’ll be giving one extra gift on Giving Tuesday to Second Baptist. And I hope you will as well.
