At the January Session meeting this week, the Session decided to wait another month before determining the schedule for returning to in-person worship and reopening the church building.
We will continue virtual-only worship and the church building will remain closed through the end of February.

We are excited to welcome the following new members into our fellowship: Lindsey Cope, Elizabeth Seastrunk, Zachary Burch and Ginny Williams. Their pictures and bios will be in February’s 2nd Edition. Since we are not able to extend the right hand of fellowship in person, why not shoot them a welcome email?

Pastor Tim is leading us in a virtual study of the Major Messages of the Minor Prophets. A new lesson will be posted on our YouTube channel and on our website each Thursday and we invite you to study the lesson at your leisure. Then on the 2nd Wednesday of each month (Feb 10, Mar 10, Apr 14, May 12) we will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom to discuss the lessons from the previous month. This will be a time to bring your questions, comments, and insights and share them with the group.
Our second Bible study of the New Year is linked below, and has been posted on our YouTube channel, as well as on our website. There are also questions for further reflection on our website (both the video and questions can be found under the Wednesday Night Bible Study tab).

PRESBYTERY HABITAT BUILD! Our congregation will be participating in a Presbytery of East Tennessee Habitat build in Knox County beginning March 20th along with: Bethel (Kingston), Farragut, First Knoxville, First Oak Ridge, Fountain City, Lake Hills, First Lenoir City, Powell, Sequoyah Hills, UKirk at UTK, West Emory, and Westminster. As a Presbytery we have committed to raising $30,000 towards the cost of the build. Our Session has committed $5,000 from the John Smartt Sr. endowment fund, but we are still short of our goal as a Presbytery. If you are interested in making an individual contribution to the build, you may do so through the church or directly to Habitat for Humanity, Knoxville.

CHURCH FRIENDS! JOIN THE TRIPLE P (Presbyterian Prayer Partners)
The Discipleship Team is extending this spiritual growth opportunity of having a prayer partner as we enter the “winter of our discontent.” Our separation is more difficult in winter months where there are fewer times to be outdoors even for driveway visits. For many reasons, it is important that we stay in contact with each other. Pastor Tim’s message on Sunday, January 10th emphasized the importance of prayer, and the Discipleship Team to emphasize the importance of connection with each other by becoming part of the Triple P.
Communication can be accomplished by phone, Facetime, Zoom, or snail mail. As we seek to be the priesthood of believers let us join with each other to pray. Partners can read and discuss a daily Bible reading calendar, scriptures for the day, have a casual discussion, or just exchange prayer requests.
To participate, go to the homepage of the church website (2ndpres.org) or call/email the church office to sign up and leave your name with Audrey (865-523-2189, ajohnson@2ndpres.org). There is no deadline for signing up.

As a reminder, the church building is currently closed by order of the Session. The church staff is currently working from home. The vestibule is open Monday through Thursday so that drop offs and deliveries can take place, however, the building is still closed. There should be no reason for anyone to come into the church building.
Thank you for your consideration and help to keep everyone safe!

Second has participated in the Fish Food Pantry - delivering food to hungry Knox County families in need - for decades on the 4th Tuesday of the month. To continue to effectively carry out this long-time mission of the church, we are very much in need of more participants.
There are two separate functions – food packing in the morning in the Fellowship Hall, and food delivery in the early afternoon (two to a car). Either function is a commitment of just 3 – 4 hours one day of the month (4th Tuesdays).
We will evaluate the local health and safety factors in early March and hope to restart on Tuesday, March 23rd. Please consider joining the effort.

Members of the Wednesday Night Cooking Teams are collaborating to create a homecooked meal, and will gather safely at the church to package them into individual portions, that they will then distribute to some of our members who are living in their homes but may not be getting out and about to pick up dinner or groceries to make a home-cooked meal.
The teams would love to have your help in cooking and/or distributing meals in hopes that this ministry might be able to grow in the coming months. If you’re interested in helping by cooking a portion of one of the meals and/or would be willing to deliver some of the meals, please contact Leslie Matthews: flowlilly@gmail.com, (865) 765-0549.

Following the end of each year, the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary normally selects and reports on a "Word of the Year." For their report on 2020, however, they broke their own practice and included many words -- some new, some old but with new meanings -- to help tell the story of the year just past. For this Sunday's lesson, we will take a look at some of those words from a biblical standpoint and consider how they tell part of the tale of our journey through 2020 and how they give us some perspective as we move on.
