As of August 4th, 2021
The Worship Ministry Unit and Session will continue to update our Covid-19 precautions as we monitor the situation in Knoxville and Knox County, especially with regards to the new Delta variant. We encourage everyone who is able to get the Covid vaccine, as that provides the best and safest way to ensure the safety and health of all of our members and visitors.
See below for our most current guidelines. The health and safety of the entire congregation depends upon each of us following these precautions. We ask that you please read and familiarize yourself with them so that we may worship and serve safely and comfortably.
Face coverings: Face coverings are required for all activities in the church building, including worship, for the time being. Groups and committees may meet in the church building, provided face coverings are worn, however meeting on Zoom is strongly encouraged, if possible.
Face coverings are optional outdoors for anyone, regardless of vaccination status.
Safe Physical distancing: Enforced physical distancing will be practiced for the time being. Every other pew will be taped off and each household is asked to maintain an appropriate, safe physical distance and to refrain from physical contact with those outside of one’s household. Worshipers are asked to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others when choosing a seat for worship.
Coffee and donut holes: These are available in the Fellowship Hall prior to worship each Sunday.
Nursery: The nursery is open during worship and childcare is available for children, infant to age 6.
Singing: We are singing during worship, but we ask you to sing quietly behind your face covering. We will usually sing two hymns in a service, rather than three, and we may sing fewer verses than normal. Hymnbooks are available for those who choose to use them. Hymn lyrics will be on the screen, however they will no longer be printed in the bulletin. The choir will wear face coverings while singing.
Bulletins/Bibles: Worship bulletins are available for those who desire one. For those who do not, all communal aspects of the worship service are displayed on a screen. Bibles are available in the pews for those who choose to use them.
Offering Plates/Pew Pads: Offering plates and pew pads will not be passed for the time being. Offering plates will be placed at the entrances to the sanctuary for those who wish to place their offering there, either as they enter or exit.
Communion: We will continue to celebrate communion on the first Sunday of the month using self-contained communion cups. When the current precautions are lifted we will offer an optional intinction communion station up front for those who wish to come forward and partake of communion in this manner. This will be in addition to, not in place of, the self-contained communion cups.
Worship Leadership: The choir will continue to be a small choir of scholarship singers, masked, properly distanced and rehearsing on Sunday mornings. The Worship Ministry Unit will evaluate at its September meeting whether or not to increase the size of the choir to include more of the congregation.
The Worship Ministry Unit and Session will revisit these guidelines throughout the summer and fall and adjust accordingly as case levels, hospitalization levels, and vaccination levels allow.

The DEADLINE for the September Second Edition Newsletter is
Friday, August 20th!
|
|
We hope you’ve been enjoying the return of coffee and donut holes.
We know we have!
Beginning this Sunday, we will be moving this gathering to the
Fellowship Hall so that everyone has more room to spread out.
We need your help making sure that the donut holes get picked up on Sunday mornings.
Donut holes will cease after August 15th,
if we cannot get any volunteers to help!
As you visit the donut hole bowl, you’ll notice a sign up sheet. Check your calendar and sign up for a couple of dates to swing by the Dunkin’ Donuts on Kingston Pike, and do your part to make sure your church family is full of donut holes before worship!

On August 13th-17th, the UT Sorority Village will be utilizing our lower parking lot for rush activities.
We have been happy to offer them our space in the past and are glad to do so again this year.
Please be advised that if you come to the church on one of those days, parking may be a little more crowded than usual.

Come serve a meal at UKirk!
Each evening during UTK Welcome Week, UKirk serves a free meal on the front lawn of the UKirk house. Different congregations pay for these meals and provide folks to serve the students. For the last several years 2nd Presbyterian has sponsored “Taco Tuesday” and we will do so again this year.
We are in need of 4-6 people to serve the meal on
Tuesday, August 16th from 6-8 pm.
The UKirk staff will take care of placing the order and having it delivered. All you have to do is SHOW UP! No special skill is necessary, other than to be able to stand at the table, man the taco bar provided by Soccer Taco, and be a friendly and welcoming presence for the students that come through.
If you are interested in representing 2nd Presbyterian Church and meeting some great college students, please let Pastor Tim, Tim Wright, or Audrey know of your interest!

As you are aware, our Youth Director and Assistant Director of the Preschool, Holly Grimm, recently lost her husband, Justin, who was a teacher in our preschool. There will be a service of remembrance for him here at 2nd Pres on August 15th at 4:00 p.m.
In the meantime, there are several ways you can support Holly and her family. Gift cards to restaurants (fast food or otherwise) or Kroger would be greatly appreciated. This allows them a little more freedom, given their schedules.
If you would like to help pay some of Holly’s bills, please contact Pastor Tim for more information about how to do that.
There are also plans being made for a memorial to Justin and a scholarship fund for Tinley, Justin and Holly’s daughter. We will let you know when those plans are finalized, should you want to contribute to those.
Please continue to keep Holly, Kylie, Brayden, and Tinley your prayers.

Service & Outreach
West View Work Day
|
|
THANK YOU to everyone that helped prepare West View Elementary last Saturday for the opening of school and for the student’s school supplies!
|
|
With a $1000 contribution from Westminster Presbyterian Church, a very positive response from many of our members and a VERY GENEROUS contribution from one of our members, the full $10,000 cost of Second Harvest providing a weekend backpack of food to all children at West View Elementary School throughout the school year has been raised.
Congratulations and “thank you” for your generosity and continued support of the children of
West View Elementary School!

If you like to shop, the Fish Pantry mission is in need of the following household and personal items:
-Dish Soap
-Bath Soap
-Shampoo
-Toothpaste
-Deodorant
-Toilet Paper
Our once-a-month Fish team receives phone call requests for food and these additional items; then they are sorted, packed, and delivered to each client's household.
All donations should be newly purchased, and any quantities would be greatly appreciated.
They can be dropped off into the “Fish” bin that sits on the floor in the coat rack area just off the atrium. Thank you!

Compassionate Cuisine is a program from the Care and Compassion committee and our Cooking Teams. This group is collaborating to create a homecooked meal, and will gather safely at the church to package them into individual portions, that they will then distribute to some of our members who are living in their homes but may not be getting out and about to pick up dinner or groceries to make a home-cooked meal.
The teams would love to have your help in cooking and/or distributing meals in hopes that this ministry might be able to grow in the coming months. If you’re interested in helping by cooking a portion of one of the meals and/or would be willing to deliver some of the meals, please contact Leslie Matthews: flowlilly@gmail.com, (865) 765-0549.
