A Message from Our Pastor and Teacher
|
March 10, Second Sunday of Lent ~ Out of Our Control"
Even Jesus got dang frustrated when folks didn’t behave as he would have liked. We probably aren’t receiving death threats from Herod as Jesus was, but our wellbeing could be threatened by the idea that if we just try hard enough, are nice enough, say just the right thing, life will always go our way. We run around in so many directions, trying to herd the chicks into some imagined semblance of perfect formation (have you ever tried to herd chicks?). What if we could let go of needing all things and all people to be “just so” and instead learn to dance with the unfolding of that which is not ours to control?
SPECIAL NOTE: Pastor Jill will be taking a Continuing Education week, March 14 – 21st at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. She will be graduating from her Stillpoint Spiritual Direction program. Rev. Erin Beardemphl, Honorary Minister of Worship and Arts, will be the “Pastor On Call.” If you have a pastoral care need, please call Erin at (951) 897-6270 or email Erin at erin_g_h@yahoo.com.

On February 24, the Russian military attacked Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of persons have already sought refuge outside of Ukraine. Others have remained in the country but are displaced from their homes. The humanitarian crisis is accelerating in Ukraine and in neighboring countries as the violence escalates and the number of people on the move multiplies. The United Church of Christ is appealing for support for refugees and for elderly and other vulnerable people who are displaced within Ukraine and unable to leave. If you would like to provide financial assistance you can write a check to “Redlands United Church of Christ” and write in the memo, “Ukraine relief.” Or you can give through your Realm account under “Ukraine relief.” All financial donations collected will be sent to help Ukraine refugees.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
On March 26, 1944, a group of white men brutally lynched Rev. Isaac Simmons, a Black minister and farmer, so they could steal his land in Amite County, Mississippi. Members of his family, some of whom witnessed his murder, fled the state, fearing for their lives. The white men responsible for lynching him successfully stole the Simmons’s land, and were never convicted for their crimes.

From the Environmental Justice Team

Urgent action needed to address climate change’s catastrophic threats, U.N. report warns
“People’s lives and Earth’s ecosystems are at increasing risk of catastrophe if nations fail to quickly reduce emissions of planet-heating gases, according to a new United Nations report that urges humankind to scale up efforts to adapt and protect the most vulnerable.
As global warming continues to unleash deadly heat waves, intense droughts, floods and devastating wildfires, researchers from 67 countries called for urgent action to address the crisis. They said many of the dangerous and accelerating effects can still be reduced, depending on how quickly the burning of fossil fuels and emissions of greenhouse gases are curbed.”

Valet Parking Service Available
|
Valet parking service is now available on Sunday mornings for those who find it difficult to park in the parking lot and make the walk up the hill to the Sanctuary doors. One of the greeters is acting as a valet. Pull up in the circular driveway and the valet will take your keys and park your car for you. They will return your keys to you in the sanctuary. At the end of the service meet the valet at the Sanctuary doors and they will retrieve your car for you. If you wish to stay for fellowship, they will park the car in the circular drive and return your keys to you. We hope this will be helpful for those who need this service. We also need more drivers to act as valets. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering as a valet, contact Sue Wallace, Church Growth leader at 909-522-7894 or wallteach@aol.com.

United Church of Christ Special Mission Offerings sponsor vital ministries that bring hope to people in the U.S. and around the world. Our church has identified four areas where critical human needs exist. These Special Mission Offerings collectively serve to lift people closer to the abundance and wholeness to which Jesus Christ has called us to work together to bring about.
OGHS - shorthand for One Great Hour of Sharing - is one of these offerings, and wil be received the fourth Sunday of Lent (March 27). Watch The View for more details, and come prepared to be as generous as you are able.
