Epiphany Sunday and Second Sunday of of Christmas, January 2, 2022 ~ “Angels Among Us: More Life”
By now Joseph was used to angels. And he needed their timely warnings more than ever. Jesus was barely a toddler and his trouble with the Roman Empire had begun. Jesus, the Savior of Humankind, becomes a refugee – forced from home by oppression and violence. We ask ourselves how we might usher in “more life” in the face of that which feels destructive. One last time in this series we hear the message “Do not be afraid” to get up and go – leaving those things that weigh us down and moving into the new year with new life.

If you are participating virtually, we will share together Holy Communion in our online interactive worship. Before the time of the service, you will want to prepare some bread - a slice, a small loaf, a tortilla, a rice cake - a wheat product is not necessary. Let it be something you alone, or your with others in your household, may break and share. Prepare a cup or cups of juice or your choice of wine-with or without alcohol.

- Prayers for Margaret Barnett who passed from life to Life on December 18. A service for Margaret Barnett is scheduled for January 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team |
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
- Desmond Tutu, leader of the South African Council of Churches and later as Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Tutu led the church to the forefront of Black South Africans’ decades-long struggle for freedom. His voice was a powerful force for nonviolence in the anti-apartheid movement, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Plastic World or Plastic-Free World? Some History

Humans now recognize plastic pollution as a crisis touching every one of us; indeed, it is not just a problem afflicting the oceans. Two-thirds of U.N. member states expressed openness to considering the options of a new agreement on curbing plastic production in 2020. So, what are some important steps to take to address this crisis?

The first giant step is unpackaging. Nearly half of all packaging is single-use, so cut down on packaging. Producers should redesign systems for distributing consumer goods and offer consumers non-disposable options, like bulk distribution and returnable, refillable containers. Consumers can make purchasing decisions based on packaging and end-of-life waste.

A second step is to create a culture of reuse…not just households but entire economies. Businesses can commit to a system shift toward nontoxic reusables throughout supply and distribution of goods. Necessary single-use items would need to be recyclable or compostable.

A third step is to radically improve recycling. Hard truth: Even if you put it into the recycle bin, and it’s uncontaminated and made of recyclable material, it doesn’t get recycled if there’s no market for it. Currently, it’s cheaper to make new plastic or glass than to use recycled material. Without market demand, “recycled” yogurt containers go to the landfill.

Fourth step, make healthy compost with the rest. Bioplastic or fiber-based alternatives have been developed. But studies show current plant-based plastics can be as toxic as conventional plastics. Toxic additives in fiber-based packaging contaminate compost. And a lack of commercial composting in many places means “compostable” containers end up uncomposted and in landfills or incinerators.
