A Message from Our Pastor and Teacher
|
Second Sunday after Epiphany - January 16, 2022 - “The Beloved Community”
This Sunday we witness Jesus’s first miracle at a wedding feast as he transforms water into wine. Weddings join more than the people being married. They join families, traditions, and communities. Two become one in many ways.
On this MLK Jr. weekend,we celebrate what King called “the beloved community.” The beloved community is one in which we recognize the sacred value of all
people. The beloved community is where we are called to care for one another
for better, for worse, in sickness, and in health.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
Sidney Poitier demonstrated great commitment to the civil rights movement and saw it as an important part of his image as an actor. As a matter of principle, he avoided roles based on racial stereotypes and instead opted to play dignified, well-respected men on screen.
“It’s a choice, a clear choice,” said Poitier. “If the fabric of the society were different, I would scream to high heaven to play villains and to deal with different images of Negro life that would be more dimensional. But I’ll be damned if I do that at this stage of the game.”
Poitier and Harry Belafonte went to Greenwood, Mississippi, in 1964, moved by the deaths of three civil rights workers killed after trying to register African Americans to vote. The pair stuffed at least $70,000 cash in a bag to help fund voting rights efforts. They were chased by gun-toting Ku Klux Klan members while leaving Greenwood and narrowly made it out alive.

From the Envionmental Justice Team
|
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden:
“We are now at a moment of time when humanity is the dominant force for change on planet Earth, causing increasing turbulence in our biosphere. That can be a frightening thought; however, we can also choose to see it from the opposite angle. Humankind is at the steering wheel of our planet. We have science, we have technology, we have an interconnected global economy and that means we do have a choice. We can stay on the current course with devastating consequences, or we can choose to take a safer, more resilient path to turn the ship around before it is too late. The choice is ours and this is our window of opportunity.”
Carl Folke, Director and Professor, Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences:
“Whether humankind has the collective wisdom to navigate the Anthropocene to sustain a livable biosphere for generations to come and for the rest of life with which we share the planet is the most formidable challenge facing our species.”

We Need Flowers, Even If We're Virtual Right Now
|
Dee Dee Seek is the new flower coordinator. If you want to dedicate flowers, contact Dee Dee at Dee_sparkie10@yahoo.com or phone her at (951) 534-3438. You will need to give your name, the dedication you wish to make to anyone or anything, and any colors you prefer.
We use Above the Stem florists here in Redlands. Dee Dee will contact them for you, and they will deliver the flowers on Sunday morning. The cost of the flowers is $60.00. There are several ways to pay for the cost.
- You can drop the money or check in the collection plate on Sunday morning. Make the check to RUCC and put “flowers” in the memo line. If you pay with cash put it in an envelope and label it flowers.
- You can mail a check or cash to the church office. Make sure you designate it is for flowers.
- You can pay on-line through Realm. Choose “flowers” as the fund.
You may also provide your own flowers from your garden or from another vendor. Just make sure you send Dee Dee the dedication information and have the flowers there by 10:15 a.m. on the Sunday you choose. If you have questions do not hesitate to email or call Dee Dee.
