Travel Diary to Holden Village from Director of Youth Ministry Jacob Boettcher Belz!

Dear Normandale,

After a grueling 19-hour day [this past Sunday, June 15], we are officially one hour away from our hotel in Wenatchee as I write this. The one rule of Amtrak travel is to: expect the unexpected and that has stood true!

Below you'll find a recap of our day!

Tomorrow travel continues. An early wake up call followed by bus and boat rides will culminate in our arrival at Holden Village, [where] we won't have cell reception.

God's peace be with you!

Jacob

4:45am CT - said farewell to [parents and loved ones] in the airport! We made it successfully through security. Starbucks and McDonalds were breakfast! (Or a midnight snack? I'm not sure which...)

6:55am CT - departed MSP. We largely sat together on the plane, and filled with disagreement about if Delta's biscoff cookies are good or not (I will remain neutral here).

8:45am PT - landed in Seattle-Tacoma and made our way to regional transport. This was the first train of the day. Similar to the RTD in Denver or Metro Transit in Minneapolis, the light rail took us directly downtown where we had a three-minute walk to the King Street Station, where we stowed our bags for the day around 10:30am.

10:30am PT - walked through downtown Seattle including Pioneer Square to reach Pikes Place market.

11:00am PT - ate lunch together at Soundview Diner which offered a welcome reprieve from walking and some delicious food!

12:00pm PT - the group split into two smaller sections where we wandered around the market. My team went in search of a new wallet (we were unsuccessful). Sophie [Klein]'s group worked to find the original Starbucks only to find a huge line outside. They opted instead to get coffee elsewhere.

12:45pm PT - we rejoined to sit outside of the market and enjoy the sun. From there we walked back to Pioneer Square in search of smoothies which we did ultimately find. Some were excited to search for Pokémon cards, and others were looking for a game set. So we decided to hunt for a gaming store! It ended in success.

1:45pm PT - Some wanted to also see a bookstore!

2:45pm PT - after one more trip to a Pokémon store the whole group took a rest at the King Street Station where boarded our train to Wenatchee at 4:45pm.

4:45pm PT - EVERYONE was surprised by the amount of legroom on the train as we took our seats. We were all settled in when…

5:00pm PT - ... the train stops! A good chance for us to talk about unexpected events during travel and how to respond. We were delayed about an hour, when we finally started going again.

9:18pm PT - We traveled through the Cascade Mountains east; during that time the group has eaten sixty (60) or so fruit snacks. Unfortunately, the cafe car did not have enough meals to accommodate our group, so we bought some extra snacks and will have some pizza once we arrive at the hotel.

9:27pm PT - The conductor just passed through to announce we are a half hour to Wenatchee, so we are almost there! This group has just been wonderful, positive, and confident travelers. Thank you for your trust and willingness to send them to Holden with us this week! Now the final push before bed.
