ENCOUNTER Christ & LEARN to LIVE as Disciples.

Greetings in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the peace and power of the Holy Spirit as we journey together through this season of Lent.

As I continue to share updates about the upcoming church redecoration project, it is important to note that the Design Studio sessions have yielded numerous comments about the Crucifix in the Sanctuary. A proportional Crucifix was not included in the initial proposed redecoration design because we had not gotten that far in our design thinking. (The original drawings were primarily focused on painting). With many inputs, we are now beginning to consider a Crucifix design. We have had several discussions with Conrad Schmitt and are forming a group to assist with this process. We will share more on this in the coming months.

I invite you to join me on March 7th for a Synodal Listening Session! In this round, the Church is especially interested in hearing from Young Adults, and marginalized members (or former members) of the Catholic Church, i.e. divorced/remarried persons, people within the LGBT community, et al. The session is being hosted by St. Thomas More Church in Decatur on March 7th at 7:00 p.m. Register here.

Congratulations to Deacon Mike Balfour on the 23rd Anniversary of his Ordination to the Permanent Diaconate (February 24, 2001).

Next Wednesday, February 28th, we celebrate the 144th Anniversary of the Founding of our Parish in 1880, and we look forward to our 150th Anniversary in 2030!

Lent is a time to reflect on our faith and draw closer to our Lord through disciplines of prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. Let us all keep our focus on our Lenten preparation for the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter.

You are in my prayers, as I hope I am in yours.

Yours in Christ Risen,

Very Rev. John T. Howren, V.F.

Rector/Pastor

The Basilica Council of the Knights of Columbus is sponsoring the annual 40 Cans for Lent drive for the Midtown Assistance Center (MAC). The Drive will continue through Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, March 24. Over the course of Lent, the idea is to donate 40 nonperishable food items, such as canned food and boxed food. Place your items in the barrel in the vestibule. Bags and a list of items needed will be available. Please keep up the good work in your giving in this time of anticipation of Christ’s Death and Resurrection!

Most needed items:

Canned Tuna, Caned Salmon, Canned Chicken, Chili, Vienna Sausages, Jelly, Hamburger/Tuna Helper, Rice, Manual Can Openers, Baked Beans/Pork and Beans, Cooking Oil, Pancake Mix and Syrup, Protein Bars, Canned Fruit, Fruit Juice, Canned Spinach, Coffee, Tea, Laundry Detergent, Dish Soap, Hygiene Items (Shampoo, Soap, Deodorant, Toothpaste, Lotion, Razors), Feminine Hygiene Items, Kroger or Wal-Mart Gift Cards.

Pray the Rosary

After the 10:00 a.m. Mass this Sunday, members of our Knights of Columbus and Daughters of Isabella will gather after Mass to pray the Rosary together. Everyone is welcome to join them – meet in the pews in front of the Marian altar immediately following Mass.
