Nau mai, haere mai, whakatau mai!

Kia ora whānau and greetings to our school community!

Our team have been flat tack with delivery and event planning this Term, with some amazing results and feedback.

This term, we've been busy as ever facilitating vocational education and employability skill-centred workshops, as well as planning and delivering hugely successful pathway-focused events throughout the rohe.

With over fifteen secondary schools visited throughout Te Tai Tokerau this term, we are running out of available delivery spaces fast! For those of you who have not had a chance to book with us, we would love to book you for Term Four, see our contact details at the bottom of this email!

Another key focus for our team this term has been supporting local taitamariki when exploring Gateway options and various apprenticeship opportunities, a key factor to these exploration opportunities is the relationships we build with industries and their representatives, which ultimately, supports an increase in pathway options for our young talents. We are strong advocates for our Trade Academy students and the Gateway programme, which are proving to be excellent launchpads for our students' success.

All our deliveries and events are showcased within our newsletters, if your students would like to participate in any of our bespoke, interactive, and fun workshops or events get in touch with one of our team now! As we enter the crucial period of student transitions from education to employment, we anticipate an increase in our efforts to provide valuable services to your schools and students.

Our new Level-Up Pathways Presentation is gaining traction and yielding impressive results. Check out the highlights from recent deliveries below:

Events Update

Free School resource alert!

Inspiring the Future is an exciting free resource for schools across Aotearoa. Enabling schools to host their own Career events, utilising the amazing pre-made and in-depth resources created by TEC.

Based on local and international research, these events challenge stereotypes that can limit young people’s potential – by introducing them to role models from the world of work.

TEC has done the hard work for you and offers all the resources you could need to host your event. All you have to do is line up some members of your schools/kura community to act as role models!

This event format is simple and effective. The number of externals is relatively low, with streamlines the event management work and ensures that any and every school can host an event, without our industry supporters becoming overstretched. The key is to utilise your school/kura whānau networks.

Get the conversations started for an Inspiring The Future event at your school/kura for 2024!

Primary ITO - Gateway and Trade Academy

We help students to take their first steps towards an exciting career in the primary industry, and support schools too. We help students work towards qualifications that will set them up for success as they prepare to enter the workforce.

We’re also committed to supporting teachers and careers advisers with information, tools, and resources about careers in the primary industry.

Our role

Our Future Pathways team works with schools and industry to ensure we provide relevant information and education for students who are interested in the primary industries.

Once students leave school, we help them transition into employment or further education.

We focus on successful and meaningful education, which means we:

  • deliver primary industries learning in a relevant context
  • provide practical learning
  • ensure students achieve NCEA Level 2
  • increase retention of students in education
  • ensuring students successfully transition into further education or employment, such as apprenticeships.

Gateway

Training for years 11 to 13.

Our Gateway programme includes theory and practical unit standards for students in Years 11 to 13. Students reinforce theory work with real-life industry work experience, giving them a taste of what a career in the primary sector is truly like.

Currently, we offer packages of learning across:

  • dairy farming
  • horticulture
  • seafood
  • sheep and beef farming
  • arboriculture
  • apiculture
  • primary sector
  • sports turf
  • pest eradication.

We provide services to schools

As part of our Gateway programme, we offer the following services to schools:

  • comprehensive learning and resource packages for school students
  • help schools to connect to local industry employers for work placements
  • support for students to make career decisions.

We can help students get industry placements

As part of our Gateway programme, we may be able to help place your students in a primary industry business.

We have the contacts and knowledge to help match a student to the right work placement. This work placement may lead to future employment within the primary sector, possibly within the same workplace.

Trades Academy

Are you interested in a programme that will give your students a kickstart towards an exciting career in primary industries?

Our Trades Academy is a secondary-tertiary programme (STP) that provides senior secondary students with a broad range of learning opportunities in primary industries. The programme is based on a partnership between schools and the Primary ITO and delivers:

  • a coherent NCEA level 2 (or equivalent) qualification
  • a programme which leads to the NZ Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2)

All schools involved in the Trades Academy deliver the Trades Academy Primary Industry Skills (Level 2). The programme aims to give students practical skills and theoretical knowledge that will help them make informed choices about their career options in primary industries. Students gain transferable literacy and numeracy skills. They also gain work-ready skills through practical training in realistic working environments.

Students can also complete a Level 3 programme that may enable them to move into an apprenticeship in their chosen sector.
