Dear Friends,

The recent death of our beloved friend and Secretary General, Rory Kelleher, GCMOb, created a vacancy on the Board of Directors. Consistent with the bylaws of the Association, the Nominating Committee presented Dr. John Murphy, MD, KM, as a candidate for Secretary General to complete Rory’s term, which ends in December 2027. I am pleased to report that John was unanimously elected by the Board and that his election has been approved by the Grand Master.

John M. Murphy, MD, has been a Knight of the Third Class of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta for 15 years and has served the Order and the American Association in a variety of leadership, governance, and service roles. He served two terms on the Board of the American Association and one term on the Board of Malteser International Americas, and currently serves as Chair of the American Association’s Disciplinary Commission. He has also served for many years as a member of the medical team for the Association’s annual pilgrimage to Lourdes and as a member of the Malade Selection Committee. For the past five years, John and his wife, Nancy, have helped coordinate the logistics of the American Association’s Lourdes Pilgrimage. In 2019, he was awarded the Cross of Commander pro Merito Melitensi in recognition of his service to the Order.

John is a neurologist and healthcare executive who served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Danbury Hospital, Western Connecticut Health Network, and Nuvance Health. As CEO of Nuvance Health, he led a health system comprising seven hospitals, approximately 2,600 physicians, and more than 13,000 employees serving 1.5 million people across Connecticut and New York. He retired at the end of 2025 following Nuvance Health’s affiliation with Northwell Health.

John has extensive board and governance experience and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Union Savings Bank in Danbury, Connecticut. He previously served as Chairman of the Connecticut Hospital Association and on numerous other healthcare and community boards. He is a graduate of Fordham University and Rutgers Medical School and is Professor Emeritus of Neurology at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Please join me in wishing John well as he assumes his new responsibilities as Secretary General, and in continuing to pray for the repose of Rory’s soul.
