GUT HEALTH 101

DR. TUCKER’S DIGESTIVE CHALLENGE

The microbiome comprises trillions of microbes largely residing in the gut, and it has been shown to be a core regulator of the body’s metabolism, playing a pivotal role in health and disease. A healthy gut has thousands of different species of bacteria, and having a diversity of gut bacteria is beneficial. We can get into trouble when one type of species overtakes others and there is an imbalance inside our gut. We have learned that certain microbes can have a profound impact on our health and well-being.

Eating a poor diet, being exposed to environmental toxins, and/or taking certain medications, such as antibiotics, can disrupt the gut microbiome. These factors can lead to an increase in intestinal permeability (a leaky gut), which can be a factor in musculoskeletal inflammation (fascia, joints, tendons) and autoimmune conditions such as thyroid issues, arthritis, lupus, and dementia.

If you have chronic pain or a chronic condition and have not tried a 30-day program to heal a leaky gut, now is the time. I believe the evidence suggests that all autoimmune conditions involve a disruption of the intestinal barrier. In other words, you can’t have an autoimmune condition such as arthritis (pain, swelling, stiffness), lupus, psoriasis, Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s, multiple sclerosis (MS) (attacks the protective covering of nerves), or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) without having a leaky gut.

What are the most common bacterial overgrowth gut symptoms? Abdominal bloating, discomfort, distention, pain and cramps, inflammatory conditions, muscle aches, joint pain, excessive gas, constipation or diarrhea, chronic fatigue, low energy, and skin problems (e.g., acne) can all be symptoms of gut issues. You can have one or all of these symptoms. If you have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), this challenge is for you.

However, you can still have a leaky gut and think your digestive system is in good health. Although symptoms can frequently be a good indicator of a gut problem, the lack of digestive symptoms doesn't rule out a leaky gut.

How do you heal the gut and restore the health of the gut microbiome? I recommend using the "5-R Protocol", which involves:

  1. Remove the leaky gut trigger (e.g., food allergens, infections, environmental toxins).
  2. Replace certain factors that play a role in digestion (e.g., digestive enzymes, betaine HCL, bile salts, dietary fiber).
  3. Reinoculate through strain-specific probiotics and prebiotics.
  4. Repair the gut through gut-healing foods (e.g., bone broth, cabbage juice) and/or gut-healing natural agents (e.g., L-glutamine, demulcent herbs).
  5. Rebalance the body, especially the parasympathetic nervous system.
