MNN Meets with Congressman Neal to Discuss Tax Reform
On Friday, October 20, Jim Ayres, President and CEO of United Way of Pioneer Valley and Chair of MNN's board, Jim Klocke and Tonja Mettlach of MNN, and Katie Allan Zobel, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, held a timely and informative meeting with Congressman Richard Neal.
As the ranking Democrat of the House Ways and Means Committee and the dean of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation, Congressman Neal is right in the middle of tax reform efforts, and his insight and advice were invaluable. We were able to discuss the potential impacts of tax reform on charitable nonprofits, including advocating for expanding charitable giving incentives through a universal charitable deduction and continued efforts to preserve the Johnson Amendment. In addition, meeting with the Congressman in his district during a brief House recess allowed us to hear about local projects and priorities for the 1st Congressional District.

Unfortunately, the requirements are not always well understood. The National Council of Nonprofits and Harbor Compliance created a Best Practices Partnership and published a white paper to help nonprofits understand charitable solicitation requirements.
