Message from MNN: "It is Our Journey—All of Ours—and We Must Continue on It"

This time of crisis has become even more of one in recent weeks, with the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. MNN condemns their killings and joins the call for justice.
MNN stands with everyone who seeks a world free of prejudice and full of opportunity. The journey towards those goals is unacceptably long, and painful. But it is our journey—all of ours—and we must continue on it.
We are inspired by the millions around the country who are calling for change in peaceful ways. By speaking out, marching, and helping others do the same they exemplify the adage, "Be the change you wish to see in the world". Together, we can bring about the Beloved Community that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned.

Policy Updates
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Extension Becomes Law
On June 5, the President signed into law the
Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act
. The Act will give nonprofits more time and flexibility in using PPP loans. Most notably, the Act extends the rehiring deadline and forgiveness period from June 30 to December 31, 2020. It will also reduce the 75 percent payroll ratio requirement to 60 percent. Click

UI Delay Passes
Governor Baker has signed into law
S.2618
, which provides additional unemployment insurance flexibilities to those affected by COVID-19. The law includes a provision that MNN and a coalition of nonprofits
advocated for
: a 120-day delay in claim payments owed by nonprofits to the Commonwealth's Unemployment Insurance trust. The law also exempts employers' experience rating from being impacted by the surge in COVID-19 related claims. MNN continues to advocate at the federal-level to simplify UI payment for self-insured nonprofits, and is in communication with the Department of Unemployment Assistance to secure additional guidance on the timeline for unemployment insurance billing for self-insured employers.

Responding with Empathy and Understanding
|
|
Right now, your organization, and the nonprofit sector as a whole, has an obligation to bolster its commitment to employees and constituents of color, especially Black employees and constituents. It is critical that nonprofits do not let commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion waver. As employees and constituents navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the existent crisis of systemic racism, it is important for nonprofits to lead with empathy and understanding.

Regional Meetings Announced for the Southeast, Pioneer Valley, and Cape & Islands Regions
|
Given the immense impacts of COVID-19 on nonprofits and the communities that they serve, providing for the health and wellness of all is a top priority. Regional Meetings—which will be held virtually—will cover important policy updates on COVID-19 recovery and relief efforts and will review new and expanded MNN services and programs. The meetings also will feature a presentation from the Massachusetts Health Connector on tools, tips, and best practices for nonprofit employers to determine which health insurance plan is best for their organizations.

COVID Relief Coalition
, comprised of members of MassMutual’s Law Department and Western New England School of Law Small Business Clinic alumni and students, will provide legal guidance to
help nonprofits understand the requirements to receive and, if eligible, access loans through the federal Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP)
as well as to help identify other potential sources of relief in the western part of the Commonwealth, primarily in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties. Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters (JBBBS)
recently launched a new initiative for
LGBTQ+ and questioning children (ages 6-18) to be matched 1:1 with an LGBTQ+ adult mentor (21+)
who can uniquely empathize and support youth through similar lived experiences. They are actively recruiting “Littles” and “Bigs” who live in the Greater Boston area (including Boston, Newton, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville.) Matches make a twice a month commitment for at least one year. Their community includes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, races, religions, and backgrounds.
